Emporio Armani Sport Trunk – $19.50 | Jockey Elance Low Rise Trunk 2-Pack – $21.00
First of all, a word about men’s underwear models. I think we all know that bigger is, in most cases better… but there must come a point when “big” becomes “impossible” due to the laws of physics, the coefficient of friction, and the biological structure of the female form.
The two men modeling the sport trunks above don’t fall into the impossible category, but take a look at this guy, this guy, and this guy, and try and tell me someone hasn’t stuffed a butternut squash in their drawers. Unless those gents are having romantic relations with a woman who’s got an undercarriage like a pickle jar, it ain’t happenin’.
Now, onto underwear.
Seems that women just don’t enjoy tighty whiteys. Boxers don’t offer any kind of real support, and boxer briefs ride up too much. The answer is a boxer-brief with cropped legs called a Sport Trunk.
Yes you could stick to briefs in colors other than white, but the sport-trunk is the best blend of a grown up shape, with enough support for your grown up junk.
Also try these other brands of sport trunks in an affordable price range:
- Murano Stripe Trunks (Dillards) 2-Pack – $20.00
- Evolve No Show Trunks (Target) 2-Pack – $10.99
- Jockey Fashion Trunk – $18.00
- Harvey Mushman Contrast Trunks 2-Pack – $25.00
These styles look great on a guy if your in shape, and are decently flattering if you’ve packed on a few pounds lately.
This may be TMI, but I prefer Calvin , Papi, and a few others in this style. The silky smooth fabric is something a guy can enjoy.
I agree with JC, except in price. I’ce chose a happy medium with the Dockers trunk, inexpensive, flattering, and comfortable. I get them on sale for $18.00 at the store, as well.
Best boxer-brief is the Tommy Hilfiger, I have literally tried them all and Tommy is the only one to get it right. Both their shorter and tighter fitting sport and the looser-longer regular brief fit perfect and have a great tall waistband that won’t fall apart after many washes. A good second brief for travel is ExOfficio Boxer-brief. Not as good fitting as the Tommy, but it can go without being washed and can be washed in a sink and dried out in minutes if you do a lot of light travelling/camping/climbing etcetera. Also the material feels like silk, but doesn’t trap any heat… seriously whatever they make those things out of it is a magic fabric.
My current favorite is the Midway 3D by Jockey, which has been discontinued and is now on sale for $10/pair… and the newer version isn’t nearly as nice… so, stock up! I just did.
I know that Joe doesn’t like boxer briefs with the longer leg, and Midway briefs have a SUPER long leg, longer than any other underwear I’ve been able to find, but I really like this because it reduces friction between my inner thighs when I walk. These don’t ride up because of the very strong elastic in the leg.

I can’t get into shorts or boxer briefs. They’re not as comfortable as briefs, so what’s the point?
I was at Target yesterday and thought what the hell and bought the Evolve 2 pack. They fit me well and feel as good as my UA although I’m not quite as packed in. The Evolves leave a little more room for your junk. I wish they came in other colors or at least black. Beats paying $26 for CK and UA.
Rod: Next time you head back, check out these oxfords. Wearing one right now. Can’t believe how well they fit for the price ($20)
Joe, I was going to look at them but I’ve got quite a few fitted dress shirts for work. I did pick up a couple Athletic Fit T’s and V necks. Anytime I find something that fits my build I buy it. 5’10” 160lbs broad shoulders, 32 waist, chicken legs. I picked up a blue that goes great with blue eyes, blonde hair. Light skin and blonde hair makes it tougher to find things that don’t wash me out at least until August. I do tan well, when there is sun.
Joe, when are you going to do a shorts or swim shorts article for skinny guys with skinny legs? I’m tired of all the box square leg board shorts I keep finding.
Swim Trunks vs. Board shorts. Great idea. I’ll work on finding some good options for everyone. Thanks Rod!
