When making a cocktail with just a couple of ingredients the better they are the better your drink will be. Simple, right? A key ingredient should never be an afterthought. Not so important with a Jack and Coke, but with a drink like the gin and tonic it’s worth taking stock of your options.

Assuming you already have a fine tasting gin – and I don’t know why you’d be drinking bad gin because bad gin has a way of being really exceptionally bad – I recommend mixing it with Q Tonic. Yeah, it’s around $2 for a 187ml bottle, but the difference is astounding. Q is noticeably less sweet than standard tonic brands and has a more complex flavor profile that actually compliments gin rather than overpowering it. Q is so pleasant it’s the first tonic water I’ve tried that I drink on it’s own. Compared to Q, a G&T made with Schweppes might as well be a gin and Sprite.
