There’s bad news, and there’s good news. The bad news is that there was a massive fire at the main Guinness Brewery in Ireland this past week. Two firefighters were injured and it looked pretty ugly for the plant for awhile. The good news is that the Firefighters are doing okay, the fire torched just a non-beer-storage warehouse, and they say output shouldn’t be affected.
And that’s tremendous. Why? Because Guinness is by far the greatest all around mass produced beer on the planet. Sure there are tons of micro and craft breweries that churn out amazing ales and lagers which I’m sure I’d try before I had my 57-millionth pint of Guinness. But as far as producing beer on a mass scale, Guinness is second to none.
Here’s five reasons why…
1. The Use of Nitrogen – Nitro Beers are just plain superior to their CO2 brethren. You get all of the taste in a much smoother package. Less gas in your gut too. And that’s never a bad thing.
2. Taste – Guinness is one of those you either love or hate beers. But it certainly seems like anyone who has graduated from Natty Light and Micky’s seems to appreciate a Guinness every once in awhile.
3. Calories – Guinness has a ridiculously low Calorie count. Just 125 Calories per 12 oz. Yes you’ll most likely be drinking it in a 16oz glass, freshly pulled from a tap, but take into consideration these other beers and the amount of calories they pack into 12 ounces:
Blue Moon 171 | Bud 145 | Fat Tire 160 | PBR 153 | Red Hook 188 | Sam Adams 160 | Sierra Nevada 175
So the point being: You can have more pints of Guinness and still fit into your clothes.
4. Manliness – Kitten Fart Sorority Chicks don’t drink Guinness. Even many ultra-manly men who for some unknown reason have limited their palates to Miller Lite, Coors Light, or Bud Lite, will scrunch up their oh-so-manly faces at a Guinness. Why? Hell if I know.
5. Lease Length – In 1754, 34-year-old Arthur Guinness signed a lease on a Brewing facility so he could get to work making his own beer. The length of the lease? 9,000 years. The man was committed.
All of those who love their Guinness held their collective breath when they heard the news about the fire at the home brewery. Raise a pint this holiday season in celebration that Arthur’s brewery escaped mainly unscathed.
