We’re in the late summer doldrums for sure. Back to school shopping is winding down, pre-season football is in full swing, and Labor Day is (mercifully) just a few weeks away. Brands are running clearance events to move along unsold past-season stuff, stubbornly hanging on like a drunk party guest who should have left hours ago.
Doesn’t mean there aren’t some smart items to be had. Especially in this Banana Republic extra 20% off event which just launched. New items, new markdowns, etc.
Extra 20% off runs through Tuesday 8/25. Off we go with the picks…
Looks like BR “understood the assignment” as this is a blazer for brighter days in an interesting but not shocking color, breathable material, and butterfly lined in the back for easier ventilation. Sidenote: It makes no sense when a brand invests the time in designing a linen blazer only stick a full lining inside the darn thing. That hasn’t happened here. And that’s great news. Clearly it also looks good with jeans, so it’ll be ready when fall temperatures finally stick.
Because while a lot of us are longing for fall, it’s gonna be “resort shirt” weather for awhile. Four colors but limited size selection at post time.
All cashmere wheelhouse crewneck sweaters. And whereas some brands make “cheap” cashmere sweaters which truly feel cheap, BR has a good track record with their cashmere. So these are a solid bet.
Made in Portugal. Italian suede uppers. Should look good in both summer and early/mid fall temperatures.
The jacket would be a great stand alone sportcoat thanks to the textured airy wool and patch pockets. So no need to splurge on the whole suit if you don’t want to. Colors on sale are the “Utility Blue” (above) or a different but not too crazy “Green Barble.” Breezy Italian ventile wool. Sizes are moving pretty fast.
Summery. Also good to wear with jeans on weirdly warm fall days. Green option is final sale.
For one last trip to the beach. Or a long weekend planned in the mountains. Or just something to have on hand for grocery runs/farmers market trips/smuggling mogwis, etc. 14″ x 25″ x 9″. Zipper close top.
Great price but there’s a big catch. *The trousers are frustratingly tagged as final sale. So there’s no returns or exchanges on the pants. Kinda ridiculous they did that. Full in-person review here. Size shown above is a 40R + 32×30 on 5’10″/180.
Laid back. 100% cotton, three inseams to choose from, elastic waist + interior drawstring.
Looks to be somewhere between a smoking slipper and a true loafer. Reviews seem to indicate they run a touch large. Thankfully these aren’t final sale at post time. So returns are possible.
100% linen. That’s quite the tropical torso party.
As seasonally different as it gets from those just mentioned linen resort shirts. “A Mac, but make it Barbour-y.” Cool, yes, but won’t look as right dressed up with a suit as a more standard, non-waxed-looking mac will be.
100% merino wool with a thermal knit that can be dressed up or down. Five colors. Clearly leftover from last fall/winter.
Not technically part of their sale section, but on special for half off. Which is quite good, considering BR usually caps their deals on full price bestsellers at 30% or 40% off. BR’s OCBDs. Specifically washed for softness.
The extra 20% off Banana Republic sale and final sale items deal is set to end Tuesday, 8/25.
Inspired by all those back to school shopping lists, let's grow it up and do…
Penny drivers with the deck shoe soles. In person with some summer slip-on chimeras.
Last day for the extra 25% off Allen Edmonds sale items deal.
Newness news: J. Crew has brought back their excellent stretch-infused and breathable Traveler suits.
Attn shoe hounds: Italian perforated suede drivers, cool retro sneakers, and dress shoes.
Old-money looks on a new, accessibly priced watch. Yours to win if you're lucky.
