In Review: GAP’s new soft, fall ready, Dobby Blazer

GAP Dobby Cotton Blazer – $53.97 w/ WEEKEND ($89.95)

It’s short.

Why… WHY… do brands continue to do this?

It’s not even that great of news for the short-fellas. Because the arms on most of these short, if not chopped jackets usually run long (i.e. usually GAP & UNIQLO). Now, the sleeves actually don’t run too long on this jacket, and for once on a GAP blazer the sleeve buttons are non functioning. But still.

Left: GAP’s Dobby Cotton Blazer | Right: JCF’s Chino Blazer, with a noticeably longer tail.
This will come down to preference, but to many the lower button stance
and longer tail on the JCF is easier on the eyes (now $88.50 w/ ADDTOBAG)

Yet if you can live with the shorter tail, or, actually prefer the look, then you’ll probably be happy with this thing. Some guys don’t think it looks half bad (while for some of us, the cropped tail is a deal breaker). And the soft, brushed-like dobby cotton has an almost flannel like feel to it. It’s got just a bit of “smush” to its fabric. Perfect for fall and winter. And it should go great with jeans, chambray shirts, OCBDs, and over sweaters.

It’s a relaxed sportcoat, with soft, fall ready fabric. Size shown: Medium on 5’10” / 185.

The slightly lighter blue, subtle striping gives it some good visual texture, but it won’t look awkward with jeans. Patch pockets keep it casual, and there’s little to no structured to the body. Sleeves are lined, and just a poly/cotton blend half lining to the upper back.

Again, the sleeves don’t feel outrageously long, and while there is some annoying accent stitching around the sleeve buttons, the fact that they’re non-functioning should make for easy adjustments. But they’ll have to be slight adjustments, since that accent stitching might become a chore to remove if you want to shorten the sleeves by more than 1/4″

Up close with the dobby fabric and non-functioning, but accent stitch laden buttons.

It is, for lack of a better term, a better than average “bar” blazer. When you’re meeting pals or a date for a beer or two, and would prefer to wear an easy sportcoat instead of a sweater, this works. And at $50 – $60ish with codes, you’ll be able to have enough cash to order something after happy hour expires.

But you better be okay with that shorter tail.

Shirt by Gap, Travel Jeans by Bonobos (similar shade). Watch by Hamilton (discontinued).
