The Playlist – July 2013

Music is a little like food. Like clothes, these are areas where it’s probably worthwhile for one to explore & expand their tastes. The Playlist is assembled each month by Dappered’s very own music correspondent, Tim Johnstone. Tim is a former Virgin Records Label Rep & current award winning Program Director at KRVB, which was awarded the FMQB AAA station of the year markets 50+. You can also catch his work on the weekends, when he assembles the Dossier.

Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams – “Get Lucky”

Party anthem of the summer. It’s as simple as that.

Nine Inch Nails – “Came Back Haunted”

Just a couple months after releasing the full length LP from his esoteric darkwave band How To Destroy Angels, Trent Reznor surprises with something we all really wanted from the start: a blistering new Nine Inch Nails track that takes us everywhere we wanted to go.

Lorde – “Royals”

Whereupon a 16 year old New Zealand singer infatuates the world with a pulsating  song about living large when you have no means of doing so, and being absolutely fine with it. Teen angst, updated.

Franz Ferdinand – “Right Action”

Scotland’s favorite indie rock export preview their upcoming album with a rollicking return to what made everyone go mad for them in the first place: super catchy hooks built upon an undeniable groove with party guitar fills and all manner of backing vocals.

Vampire Weekend – “Diane Young”

Quirky and chirpy and electro and somehow still Vampire Weekend. A super catchy mess of a song that crams surf guitar, doo-wop vocals and all manner of frenzied piano into two minutes and forty seconds of frenetic fun.

Airborne – “Live It Up”

For those about to rock, we salute you. That reminds me, where’s my school boy uniform?

Pickwick featuring Sharon Von Etten – “Lady Luck”

The most introspective of all tracks from this Portland bands’ impressive Can’t Talk Medicine album. Somewhere, Danny Ocean is thinking about having another go at it.

Queens Of The Stone Age – “My God Is The Sun”

Josh Homme’s vocals are as empyrean as ever on this wonderfully bombastic and altogether righteous sonic blast.

The Pixies – “Bagboy”

The first new music in forever from one of the most beloved bands in the pantheon of indie rock baffles, amuses and ultimately hits home, even if you change your mind about it every time you hear it. By the time recently departed member Kim Deal comes in at the chorus, it sinks in.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – “Same Love”

About as far from “Thrift Shop” as you can get, Macklemore & Lewis continue to bust hip-hop stereotypes with this moving, emotional and pointed commentary on one of the current hot button issues in America. Gets me every time.
