Shannon Sharpe Style Analysis: Week 7 – Corduroy & Pink
Shannon Sharpe has quietly become one of the best dressed men on sports television. Sometimes. Unlike his competition (looking at you slim solid tie all the time Jesse Palmer) Sharpe takes risks. Sometimes the risks work and sometimes they don’t. The styleometer below is how we’ll track and analyze the CBS analyst’s look. Ten is a a big win, zero is awful, and five is a forgettable “mneh.” 50% of the final grade will be the average score of your votes.
The Good
- The Meaning of the Pink: Shannon tweeted this about his pink shirt before the broadcast: “Ok its that time to tell me what u think of the outfit keeping n mind what the month of oct represents so hopefully its a keeper.” His shirt is for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A great way to work pink in instead of the standard ribbon and thus, eliminating potential clutter up front.
- The Suit/Blazer: Never in a million years did I think he’d go corduroy on national television. As Bill Raftery would say: “ONIONS!” (sidenote: Not sure if it’s a full suit or not)
- The Tie Knot: He’s got some momentum going when it comes to well proportioned tie knots. His collars are almost always substantial spreads, so the knot will be big. It’s just not enormous.
- The Lapels: Notch this week. Not skinny lapels by any means, but still not Charlie Rose huge either.
The Bad
- The Shade of Pink: Pink is great. But electric pink? It looks like an Express 1mx that’s been thrown in the clearance section during their shop-the-box sales. Coulda softened it up a little. Or a lot.
- The Tie: Corduroy is so old-school that the nuclear pink shirt and the tie with the 80s yearbook photo lasers on it seems more than a little out of place.
- The Pocket Square: The corduroy does plenty of talking. The pocket square kinda gets in the way.
The Final Grades
From Dappered: 5.0 Can’t go lower just on the corduroy alone. If a softer pink could have been worked in, maybe with a tie on a white shirt, then it could have been something else. Points as always for the cut of the suit, as well as buttoning just one button. (Coach Cowher, take note. Don’t button both sir.) But in the end this feels half way. Like a 7 yard pass on 3rd and 18. Run a draw or take your shot.
From the Dappered Readers: 6.4 Lots of 7s and 8s, but lots of sub 5 scores too.
The Final Grade: 5.7 One of his lower scores so far, but still above Dan and Boomer.

I like the pocket square, but it’s hard to see anything else with that shiny electric pink shirt and tie. I think the tie texture is a problem next to the cord jacket too. I gave him a 4.
On any other person I’d agree about the shade of pink, but I think Shannon actually pulls that off quite well, and it coordinates perfectly with the pink in his tie. I know your personal style is more minimalistic but Shannon clearly has the style chutzpah to pull off a bright pink like that, and, in my opinion, people with dark/brown/black (covering my bases) skin look great in bright colors. And I think he deserves extra points for wearing corduroy.
I think a biggish tie knot is perfect on him, and this fits that really well. I love the proportions. The corduroy + hot pink looks great and like Andrew above said, his skin really balances it well. Maybe it’s the South Florida in me, but I LOVE bright colors like this. I gave him an 8. It’s lower if the suit is corduroy though.
with a different shirt he would have nailed it. actually like the pocket square as it breaks up what looks to be a lot of brown. As it stands, 5
I actually don’t hate the shirt, I think it goes well with his skin tone. I think he should have cooled it down with a different tie and lost the pocket square.
I think the shade of pink ties everything together. If it wasa more ‘tame’ shade or a white shirt I wouldn’t like this outfit at all but as it is I think it looks slick.
Too much brown. Too bright of a shirt. Too bad Shannon!
I actually really like this. I gave it an 8, and I don’t even like corduroy. This is probably more on me than anything, but I really like that shade of pink. Thats no half assed pink. It’s not salmon. Thats ballsy pink.
The pink needed to be that bold to contrast against the rich brown, and hold its own against the corduroy. Anything less would have failed.
I gave him a 10, just to be contrary. Ok, not really. I actually like this outfit a lot. The bold shade of pink is awesome. I’ve never understood why even men “manly” enough to wear pink wear only one very pale shade of it. I think he pulls it off well.
Any idea what pants he’s wearing? I feel like a full corduroy suit would be a bit much. Jeans would be good in the real world, but in TV land might be overly casual.
I have to disagree with you, Joe. I think you’re way off with 5; this looks closer to an 8 or 9 to me. Could I pull this look off? Absolutely not, nor could the majority of Dappered readers. But the cut of the jacket is spot on, it doesn’t look too busy, and who doesn’t love that Sharpe can pull off electric pink and brown corduroy in the same outfit?
Seems like there are a lot of people who like clubbing shirts (think Night at the Roxbury) to be worn with their suits. I fall into the pretty conservative category, as I tend to go pretty tame with my shirts and have my ties, squares and socks hold most of the color. Guaranteed he isn’t wearing this to the office, but I can’t think of anywhere I’d actually wear that shirt.
Tie was the biggest loser here.
9. Knit tie would have been a 10.
I gave it a ten. I think the whole thing works really well together.
Just a thought, but why not combine this concept with steal that style and list prices so we can try to pull off the look? If its too much to do in one article, I understand.
He’s wearing a brown corduroy jacket, not a business suit. And he’s not going to an office. He’s a TV personality.
I’m pretty conservative in terms of my own personal business attire, but what does that have to do with what a former NFL player wears to do TV football commentary? I would wear a shirt like that almost anywhere other than a courtroom or a funeral. And I’ve never been clubbing in my life, or accused of looking like I do.
Why you mad, bro? My reference to the office was admitting that my usual location may dictate dressier attire, but that I still didn’t think the shirt would be appealing to
wear anywhere (much less a courtroom, funeral or office). That would
include to the set were I a tv football commentator. That bright of a shirt doesn’t fit my style and it reminds me of Night at the Roxbury (SFW image: http://thecia.com.au/reviews/n/images/night-at-the-roxbury-2.jpg ). *cue Haddaway music*
Nobody cares about your style except you.
I can’t tell whether this is a troll or amazingly ignorant. Everyone else is giving their opinion on the attire, based on their preference for style… you know what, I won’t spell it out for you.
That’s cool, but we’re not judging Sharpe’s style based on what we keep in our own wardrobes, but on how it works for him. I can appreciate other people’s style choices even if it’s not something I would wear. I personally think the shirt is awesome, not at all “clubbish,” and obviously takes a lot more sartorial chutzpah than the standard, boring ice cream shade of pink.
Come now fellas, let’s not let the shirt come between us. Hard to believe, but, I actually believe with parts of what BenR, and guest is saying. Noot, c’mon man, lets be a little less blunt.
I tend to relate to other’s style in light of my own as a reference point (and thus the jump in my critique) but it’s a fair point on frame of reference.
I dig the corduroy, even as a suit. and that shade of pink reminds me of high schoolers going to prom… I’m more for being bold with ties than shirt colors.
I’m thinking Choco Strawberry Torte! Hey If anybody can pull that off, shannon is one of the few.
I think the vivid pink is great, especially with the texture of the jacket and his complexion YOWZA!
Man…I’m just going to give him a 10 for the corduroy suit. That is fucking DOPE.
