Dapered Classics: The Perfect Date Night Movie – The King’s Speech

The King’s Speech – The Perfect Date Night Movie

Originally Published 1/24/2011. Seems like a decent time to re-post in case you missed it the first time.

To call it a date night movie puts it in an unfair box.  Because it’s more than that, but stay with me here.

Date night movies almost always fall short.  They’re either forced & unfunny romantic comedies, or bad thrillers that fail miserably at causing any sort of real suspense.  The King’s Speech is both incredibly funny (in many parts, laugh out loud hysterical) while also delivering more than a couple “oh sh*t” on the edge of your seat moments.  But when it finally lands at Blockbuster, if those are still around when it does, who knows what genre shelf it’ll sit on.

Because it’s what the best movies almost always are.  It’s a story.  An expertly acted, tremendously well written, beautifully shot… story.

King dies.  Eldest son assumes the throne.  Eldest son gives up the throne at the edge of war because he wants to marry an American born twice divorced possible Nazi sympathizing floozy.  But the next in line, although much stronger in character and wise beyond his years, has a raging speech impediment.  And the whole empire is listing.

The best part is… this all actually happened.  The interaction between Colin Firth who plays the new reluctant King George the VI, and Geoffrey Rush who plays the “eccentric speech therapist” Lionel Logue, should produce tons of awards.  It might slightly remind you of the Matt Damon/Robin Williams dynamic in Good Will Hunting.

If you dig history, period movies, great clothes and incredible actors, or if you often find you and your date unable to agree on which movie to see together, then see this one.  You won’t be disappointed.
