Style Debate: What’s the best width for a tie?

Ralph Lauren Italian Made Fine Dot – $49.99 ($115) | J. Press Rep Stripe – $19.99 ($34)

All things in moderation… no?

That Ralph Lauren you see on the left is Italian made, has a solid construction, and is equipped with a timeless fine dot pattern.  But it’s 3.5″ in width.

The J. Press for Urban Outfitters on the right?  Crazy cheap at under $20 and simple.  But it’s a measly 2″ in width.

Like the rise and fall of women’s hemlines, the accepted width of men’s ties seem to expand and contract like a well used accordion.  So what’s as skinny as you’ll go?  And when is a tie too fat for you?  Or does it mostly depend on collar size, type, and the lapel width on your jacket?
