If you prefer the look of rugged over urban polish, then this is probably the best deal in weekend luggage.  Made in the USA, incredible waxed canvas exterior, and leather accents that are incredibly soft for the price point.  Comes in either plenty big (small) or “I might not come back” (large).  Full review here.

Faux leather all the way but has just enough character and a low enough price.  Nice TB retro logos on the hardware.  Nothing fancy here, just a simple, extended bowling bag shape.

Tough with plenty of room.

Could be more like $110 if you were able to snag one of those LEC Living Social deals.  Big.  Not enormous, but at 18x12x15 it’s big enough to get you through an extra long weekend.  Waxed canvas feels great in your hands, leather accents, and it appears to be built for the long haul.  Rugged side grab handle pays homage to true duffels.

Fossil Jackson – $165.99 ($198)

Overstock has these two colors on sale.

Finding an all leather duffel under $200 is not the easiest thing in the world, and Fossil’s Jackson weekend bag is one of the few worth considering.  The leather quality won’t blow your mind, but many guys swear by it and it does stand out from the crowd.

L.L. Bean Signature Medium Zipper Duffel – $150.00

The mid sized option.

Also comes in a small and much larger size.  Waxed canvas exterior, leather bottom and handles, and plenty of room on the interior.  Unless you’re gunning for the navy or black color, or you’ve got some kind of L.L. Bean credit card that gets you points or something, you might want to get the Frost River instead.

If memory serves, these have been floating around on JackThreads for awhile.  Jackthreads might have it for around this $160 price or it might be a little less (can’t recall).  Some waxed canvas, some leather, and nice stripes.

This one is a little on the smaller side (1200 cubic inches) so it’s probably best to be used as a second bag and not your primary.  But if you pack light?  Can’t beat the price.  Looks and feels just fine for $25.

The “in good company” stuff on J. Rugby is about as hit and miss as it gets.  Sometimes they look like regurgitated Abercrombie and Fitch leftovers.  But sometimes they look like a hybrid between Jack Spade and Brooks Brothers.  Some color, a heavy dose of prep, and… usually expensive.

Crew twill brief (which on a side note, is holding up for me real well… so far).  14″ long so it won’t fit all laptops.  Nice top grab handle that’s positioned in the middle, not on a side.  That’s key because otherwise the weight of the bag will kick it to one side, which gets annoying real quick.  Ships free.

Canvas and Leather Weekender – $142.40 ($178)

Small, but slick.

Nice contrast between the light canvas body and the leather accents.  Leather piping on the seams also looks sharp.  No shoulder strap on this one.  Also ships free.  The major issue is it’s pretty small.  If the measurements are accurate (only 5″ deep?  really?) then this thing is skinny.  Half the available interior space of a  Duluth Pack.

The cool weather version of your favorite striped summer belt.  Colors are fall ready, the leather is nice and dark, and if you’re the type who doesn’t wear a ton of color then these can upgrade an otherwise dreary look.

 Wool Shetland and Tweed Herringbone Ties – $55.60 ($69.50)

Fall can't get here fast enough.

Another splurge for sure, but these are both made in Italy with a few construction details that should lead to sturdiness and the ties producing great knots.  They look downright skinny on the web, but they’re almost 3″ wide which is ideal for plenty of us.

There’s something about a well designed duffle with those flap over buckles that screams luxury Western train travel.  Not that there’s much luxury train travel going on anymore, but you get the idea.

*Rue La La currently has the Cole Haan in Brown and Black.  C. H. is owned by Nike so there’s no telling where it’s made.  And despite the good looks, the leather, and the more than half off price, it’s still up there as far as cost is concerned.  (For more on Rue La La, head here.)

The Duluth Pack option gives you that same 19th century luxury feel at a relative bargain price.  It’s made in the U.S. (Duluth MN), guaranteed for life, and comes in eight different color options.  It might look a little less polished in shape and form, but a lot of us will like that.  It’s canvas but comes with a leather bottom.  And if you’re really looking for an all leather duffel?  They’ve got one of those too, in a larger size, for about the same price as the Cole Haan.

Both the C.H. and Duluth Pack are perfect for weekend trips, with about 2,000 – 2,500 cubic inches of space (with the Duluth Pack beating out the C.H. by about 300 cubic inches.)  If you plan on being gone for more than a few days, Duluth pack makes a much larger version for only $25 more.

Tommy Hilfiger got a much needed re-boot last year.  Unfortunately it just wasn’t as good as the Lands’ End Canvas or L.L. Bean Signature debut.  Some Hilfiger clothes (okay, most) still run big.  Aside from their trim fit suits, Hilfiger clothes almost always require guys who are in shape or slim to size down.  And if you’re slim to skinny, you just might have to forget it all together.

The ultra preppy cable knit cricket vest has been shown some favor by the style magazines this year.  To tone down the muffy-ness just a touch, ditch the cables and work in a brighter red.  Wear it over a collared long sleeve shirt of some sort.  Vest + Tee = Justin Timberlake from a few years back.  88% Cotton, 12% linen.  Like the bow tie, not everyone’s cup of tea.  Unless you take tea every day.  Then it’s very much your cup of tea.

A sub $90 auto

There are some who demand an automatic and shun quartz.  For those in that very category yet don’t have a lot of money (so, all two of you?), this is one of the few double digit auto options.  Under $90 is pretty cheap for an automatic (Amazon description says it’s a Japanese Auto), so this very well could be one of those looks much, much better on the site than it does out of the box.  Face could be way too big.  Nice perforated strap though.  Going for $92.14 over at Amazon. Risky at best.

Tough doesn’t have to be ugly.  And simple doesn’t have to be boring.  One bag in particular seems to prove those two statements: The Waxed Canvas Flight bag from the Duluth MN based soft-goods manufacturer Frost River.

L.L. Bean Signature Twill Blazer & Pant – $135.80 (reg. $194)

As inexpensive as a solid cotton suit gets. Anywhere.

Two words on why you need a cotton, easy to wear anywhere suit:  Summer Weddings.  Recently featured in the $400 shopping spree post, this pair is now insanely cheap at $135.  Read the reviews though.  Seems like the Navy Blazer and Pant option don’t match all that well, and the sleeves seem to run long.  When combined with the functional button holes, that can cause a tailoring headache.  I picked up the lightest (almost white) version in a 38 jacket.  We’ll see how it fits my 5’9″ 170lb torso…  look for a review in the next few weeks.

This L.L. fella apparently liked to travel in style.

You don’t usually find leather weekend bags in this price range.  And finding not only a leather weekend bag for the price of canvas, but finding one that comes with perfect details like Doctor’s bag rolled handles and bottom feet?  That’s really rare.  Only the mossy green color left.

Made from Italian Wool too.

Like a Baracuta made of Glenn Plaid wool (sourced from Italy), this jacket isn’t from the Signature line so it probably runs a little bulky through the torso.  The banding at the cuffs and waist probably won’t thrill most, but for $70 it’s a nice alternative to all the standard light jackets out there.  Available in a toned down herringbone at extra cost.

Hand sewn, full grain leather uppers, and a slimmer looking silhouette.  The descriptions says they fit best with thinner socks, so… uh… don’t wear your bulky winter wools with these?  (Not that you would anyway)

Marsupial tough.

The extremely more rugged alternative to the suede chukkas.  If you spend any time in the woods and you want a unique gore-tex boot?  How about some moc toe sh*t kickers made from Kangaroo leather for under $100?

L.L. Bean Signature Cotton Cashmere Big Stripe Crew – $34.99 (reg. $69.00)

Available in grey and Freddy Krueger.

A lot of cotton/cashmere sweaters have something like 5% cashmere woven in.  This one bumps that up to 15%.  The bold stripes are much larger than your standard rugby stripes, slim fit, and well liked in the reviews.
