Best blazer deal of the season.  If you’re still looking for a winter/holiday party ready sportcoat for cheap, this is it.  The fit is an honest trim, the Italian sourced fabric is something else, and it comes in chest specific sizes.  Size shown there is a 40R and usually I’m a 38 or 39.  Moleskin is a little like velvet, but with much shorter fibers and no sheen.  Cotton but still warm. Everything on Lastcall.com is an extra 30% off through December 23rd.  The White is a full spread collar so that’s unique.  French cuffs too.  Might not be trim fit though, so tailoring might be necessary.  No iron finish on that one.  The Pink Windowpane isn’t a no-iron (which plenty prefer) but it is a trim fit with a perfect pattern.  Just enough pink without going overboard.

2. U.O. Hawkings McGill Suede Wingtip Boot – $54.99 ($78.00)

It appears the boots that get shipped by Urban Outfitters resemble these more than the rich chocolate suede version seen on their website.  There’s burnishing that when seen up close is a little too much, but once you put em’ on and stand up it’s just fine.  Full review here.  Part of the U.O. boot sale.  Ships and returns free since they’re over $50.

Affordable luxury

Part of the ongoing Ralph Lauren Holiday sale.  A bold pattern, three color options, and an 80% wool 20% nylon blend.  Stack that on top of the made in Italy status and you’ve got a nice gift for you or someone else.  72″ long, and if ordered by 11:59pm ET today (Tuesday 12/20) standard ground shipping should get it to you in time for Christmas.

4. American Eagle Wool Blend Peacoat – $60.00 w/ code 39427841 ($129.50)

With that 40% off code (which could expire any time now) this drops to a stupid $60.  It’s not hefty by any means, but not flimsy either.  The best coat you’ll find for $60, but when compared to the J. Crew Bayswater, the J. Don’t forget about her.  At this point, you might be scrambling for ideas that’ll make her smile on Sunday morning.  Jewelery is a tough call, but this is about as safe and as good of a play as it gets.  Subtle, small, and something she can wear whenever.  Three rings are dipped in either 14k gold, rose gold, or silver, and represent the circular nature of karma.  Made in the USA too.

9. Zippo Antique Brass Lighter – $16.80 | Zippo Brushed Metal Money clip – $14.50

Only you can prevent empty money clips.

Kids, don’t smoke.  But sometimes you need to make fire.  Whether it’s for the BBQ, or your pal is showing you how to drink Sambuca (have that fire extinguisher ready) it’s nice to have a flame at the ready.  Zippo’s finished brass lighter looks a heck of a lot better than a book of matches from whatever dive bar you frequent.  And the money clip?  A lot of class for barely any cost.  Both ship free from Maxton Men.

As always, it’s incredibly tough to peg when Macy’s will launch a One Day Sale.  Sometimes a month and a half will go by between them, sometimes only a few weeks will pass.  One thing is certain: These are sales worth paying attention to.  The one-day sale prices are some of the best mark downs in the retail industry.  Here’s some of the best from the One-Day-Sale which runs Tues. November 15 – Wed. November 16.  Items marked with a * are “Web Busters.” In store prices may or may not match up.  Selection on all items (especially shoes) in store can vary greatly.

Ralph Lauren Shawl Collar Stripe Sweater – $59.99 ($115.00)

Stripes but not crazy

Still not cheap for a cotton sweater, but you pay for the pony in some regards.  Shawl collar and stripes at the cuffs and waist keep it from being boring.  Far from it.

Nautica Wool Mix Peacoat – $69.99* ($250)

Size shown: Medium.

Not incredibly thick but not flimsy either.  Closer at the sides than most Nautica stuff, but you can still sneak plenty of layers in underneath.  Quilted interior and that perfect mid thigh length.  Here’s an up close view.  Part of the best affordable outerwear feature, and it’s hard to imagine the $70 price tag getting any lower.

Tallia Wool & Cashmere Flannel Suit – $219.99 ($650)

Could be a total steal. Minus the shirt.

First, not for beginners or minimalists.  Second, that shirt on the model ain’t the best play.  Claims to be a wool/cashmere blend and flannel at that.  Could be very British looking if you lose the nuclear shirt.

Calvin Klein shoes are more form than function, but a few of us have pairs that continue to hold up well over time.  Available in a black suede, deep navy suede, and this hard not to like charcoal suede.

INC Slim Fit Cord Blazer – $59.99 ($99.50)

Macy’s and GAP must be taking a reverse psychology route when it comes to their online photos for their blazers.  They just drape these things over the models and they look lifeless.  This blazer from INC is a slim fit that might need only minor alterations if you’re in good shape.  A new favorite.

Club Room Merino V-Neck – $27.99 ($70.00)

So if you want a canary yellow sweater...

These are true Club Room, not “CR by Club Room” so the fit will be pretty boxy.  Closer to Alfani than Alfani Red for sure.  If you’re real slim leaning skinny, consider forgetting it despite the sub $30 price tag.  Head in store and try a size down if you can.  Tons of colors.

Dockers Alpha Khaki – $39.99 ($68.00)

Slim and different.

A warning on these: plenty have said that they fit real slim.  So if you’ve got bigger legs or any weight on you, might be best to stay away.  Under $40 is a price that even Dockers themselves couldn’t match during their Khaki event from a few weeks back.

Hilfiger Color Block Sweater & Ranger Crew Neck – $94.98 w/ TOMMY ($196)

Save another $25 when bought together.

Those are the prices if you buy both of them together.  The code TOMMY takes $25 off Hilfiger purchases over $100, and these two wool blend sweaters could easily be a well loved foundation to your casual sweater lineup.  No word on fit though, but they do return free in-store.  Barely shy of the $99 free shipping mark.  The color block sweater is just different enough without going full Fair Isle.  And more on Fair Isle tomorrow…

Bar III Elliot Stripe Tie – $26.99 ($39.50)

Limited colors + herringbone texture + stripes = well done.

Not to completely channel the Beach Boys, but wouldn’t it be nice to know the width of these things?  Bar III is a Macy’s house brand that leans pretty young.  So be careful here, they might be razor thin.

Club Room Estate Gingham Shirt - $12.99 ($39.50)

Cheap enough to spring for tailoring.

Description says it’s “oxford woven” but it looks awfully poplin-like from this end of the internet.  Dirt cheap.  Maybe worth picking up if you’re close to the free shipping threshold and don’t want to spring for the UPS man.

Tommy Hilfiger Tuxedo Jacket and Tuxedo Pant – $234.98 w/ TOMMY

Own it. Not rent.

If you’ve got some fancy black tie affair coming up during the holidays, now’s the time to strongly consider investing in your own tux.  That way, if you do decide to take the plunge and shed those awful rental tuxedos for the rest of your life, you’ll have plenty of time to get it tailored to your exact specifications.  The Hilfiger trim fit tux should have you looking 100x better than anyone in a rental.  An extra $25 off with the code TOMMY.  Also available in the more traditional peak lapel, as well as a shawl collar if that’s your thing.

One hell of a blend.

Can a watch with any sort of digital readout look refined?  Probably not, but this might be as close as it gets.  Eco drive power system means it never needs a battery, the white stitching on the band is a great touch, and it looks like it has all the options you could want or need.  Macy’s claims it’s an exclusive, and it sure seems to be.

Made in the USA?  Under $100?  Sure thing.  Way to go Mr. Lauren.  Not sure how they made that happen, but awfully glad they did.  Quality probably isn’t bombproof or anything, but the price is right on.

Also comes in cream, green, black, and blue.

Could still come down some in price, but Ralph Lauren’s “Custom Fit” is a real modern/close fit through the sides and arms.  That’s not easy to find with rugby shirts.  Perfect alternative to a hoodie.

Italian Made Lambswool Chalk Stripe Scarf – $32.73 ($58.00)

A rare price for Made in Italy.

80% lambswool and 20% Nylon.  “Dashing” is a word that carries with it unfortunate skids of frou-frou.  “Dapper” gets thrown around these parts enough as it is.  Handsome?  That’s a real handsome scarf.  Sure to make you look even more handsome than you already are you dashing handsome dapper devil.  Or something.

St. James Spots Tie – $55.24 ($115)

A break from stripes

Still an investment at over $50, but could very well become a go-to for when you’re in a suit.  Made in Italy, 3.5″ at its widest, and has dots that are larger than pindots but not clownishly big.

More colors and more serious than the St. James.

Not the same as the St. James Spots.  These dots are a little smaller and therefor let the background color carry more of the look.  More refined than the larger spots.

Not a lot of guys get excited about belts, but this one is just out of the norm enough to stand out.  Barely.  A great looking lighter tan and the buckle has a roller to set it apart.

Careful with these since they are labeled as a “classic” fit.  They’re most likely going to be a little boxy through the sides (and there’s no way they fit as close as the red one does in the pic above.)  But since it’s lambswool, it’s already got some natural heft to it, so it’s less of a deal here.

As good as a $50 glove gets.

And just like that, they go from a big splurge to just a normal splurge.  But they do hold up well.  Lambswool lined, plenty warm, full review over here.

A little different than your standard watch cap.  On this one the cuff is ribbed.  Good color selection, and the fabric is an 80% cashmere / 20% lambswool blend.

There’s just not a lot of good looking non watch-cap options if you’re trying to prevent frostbite on your ears.  This one claims to have a fold down flap for warmth, and the darker red and lots of navy keep it from looking too Fuddish.

Grown up enough?

A love it or hate it type of jacket (full honesty: I’m on the fence about these things.)  The varsity jacket / baseball jacket look came back this year, and while sometimes it can look pretty good, sometimes it can look like you’re in costume.  A relatively small investment of $60 if you want to throw something different into your rotation.  The blue and white combination almost looks like someone stole it from Johnny U’s locker.

Two impressive boots.

Two well respected boots marked way, way down. Especially the Iron Ranger. It’s tough to find Red Wings for an affordable price, and while $176 is no small bill to pay, they are made in the USA and built to last a lifetime.
UPDATE:  Bloomingdale’s doesn’t have the right pic for the color on the Red Wings.  They’re showing the much darker Amber color while apparently selling the Hawthorne brown, which is much lighter.  The correct pic is over at NordstromMany thanks to Rett for the catch.  And know that both of these boots won’t ship for a bit.  Credit Brock for noticing that. 

Levi’s Coated Military Jacket – $101.25 ($150)

Coated cotton = poor man's leather jacket.

That dark line between the left shoulder epaulet and the neck is actually the end pull on a zipper.  There’s a hood stowed in the collar, and that zipper pull almost makes it look like the epaulet makes some freakish jump up to the neck.  But it doesn’t.  Looks like a much more expensive version of this.

Barbour Liddelsdale Slim Fit Jacket – $93.87 ($149)

Cord collar and quilted.

For those who’d like something a little different than the standard utility type jackets or the short jackets like the Levi’s seen above.  Quilted and slim fit.  Sorta like this with sleeves.

The Men’s Store at Bloomingdale’s White Dress Shirt & Gingham – $50.09 ($79.50)

Slimmer fit too.

You know a department store’s house brand has a good reputation when they don’t need to come up with some odd name to cover up the fact it actually is a house brand.  Expensive even on sale, but comes in an updated “contemporary” fit.  The gingham is about as small as gingham gets.

Bloomingdale’s Satin Stripe Tie – $39.49 $59.50)

Someone send one to Shannon Sharpe

Not a lot of risk in these.  A wider 3″ but not gigantic either.  The key with striped ties is to keep the number of colors from getting out of control.  Same goes for the width of the stripes.

To Boot New York “Aaron” Oxford – $185.85 ($295)

Sleeker than an Allen Edmonds.

Sadly only available in black, but a rare under $200 price for maybe the best looking dress shoe out there.  Full in person over here.  Made in Italy, and as good as it gets when it comes to a modern shape and classic details.

To Boot New York Lucca – $185.85 ($295)

Sorry double fans. Just one buckle here.

Not a double monk, but a single with what looks to be the identical sleek but not too pointed shape of the Aaron.  Also under $200 if you get a 10% off code.

Bloomingdale’s Camel and Red Block Scarves – $30.38 ($45.00)

They’re not wool but instead acrylic, but it all depends on what  kind of color you want to add to your winter coat.  Either of these will brighten up your neck without going overboard.

Rain rain... bring it on.

Given the texture of your suit (think heavier like flannel) you might be able to get away with wearing the Cole Haan’s all day.  The Tretron on the other hand… probably not.

Would you carry it?

This would make for an interesting “would you carry it?” segment.  Not real traditional, but that’s what Jack Spade excels at.  Canvas bag, waxwear handles, and dipped in latex so the bottom is waterproof.  Not your Dad’s attache.  On sale in the black and the much lighter grey.

Ralph Lauren Reversible Belt – $40.95 ($65) | Centerbar Belt – $53.55 ($85)

Not dress belts.

Both certainly lean casual and expensive too.  At least with the reversible belt you get two for one when it comes to colors.  The centerbar belt has you paying for the distinctive buckle.

Small Leather Travel Case – $18.90 ($30)

Nothing more than what you need.

For the minimalists who just want something to put their toothbrush and razor in when traveling, but would rather not resort to a Zip-Loc.  Under $20 but shipping is a pain.

Modasuite is a hybrid.  They’re one of these members only type sites, appear to sometimes curate products from other brands, offer made to measure for a semi-reasonable cost, and decent discounts that happen to be timed.  They’re Gilt but they’re not Gilt.  They’re Indochino but they’re not Indochino.  They’re Bonobos… and you get the idea.

Or not.  Because honestly, it’s confusing.  Here’s the dirty version of how it works:

1. You sign up by taking take a short quiz that’s supposed to help their stylists determine what you’re going to like and what you’re not going to like.  It includes pictures of outfits and a “would you wear it?” line of questioning.

2. You put in your measurements in case you want to order made-to-measure

3. Every two weeks these “stylists” put new items from Modasuite stock in a virtual closet at a discount.  For example, here’s what showed up for me, 24 hours after I filled out the quiz:

Hm…  Don’t know about you guys, but I’m squinting.  Maybe it’s because I’m trying to find where the deal is here.

Regular price on many of their items will seem slightly inflated to many of us.  For example, a windowpane dress shirt will be $56 if it’s “in your closet,” yet it’s regularly $75 if these magical stylist elves haven’t picked that particular shirt for you this time around.  Tack on a $25 made to measure charge and you’re pushing $100.  Pretty sure we all know of one or two companies that can do better than that.

With the $40 for $100 jungelcents offer Modasuite can be a bargain.  But these deals are seen by many as a way for a retailer to get their foot in your door.  Then it’s up to them to convince you they’re worth your time even without a deal.  When it comes to that scenario, Modasuite looks like it has some work to do.

That’ll work.  On Wisconsin.  Gotta love the commitment Wisconsin brands have to each other.  Lands’ End is based outside of Madison, and Allen Edmonds is right there in Wisconsin as well.  Lands’ End carries A.E.’s, and the code works on these.  Not a wingtip but instead a cap toe with a lug sole.  Nothing short of stellar.

Something to use that tie bar on.

Lands’ End knows how to make a decent necktie, and this one is perfect for the guys who just can’t stand wearing a tie that’s slimmer than 2.75″.  At a full 3.5″ wide, it’s substantial but not goofy fat (unless you’re pretty slight yourself.)  Go with something larger than a four-in-hand and a collar that’s got a bit of a spread to it.

Allen Edmonds Suede Katmai Chukka – $149.40 ($249)

Would be hard not to want to live in these.

Had to go back to the AE well for these.  It’s like Allen Edmonds took a suede desert boot, threw it in a blender with a pound of awesome and a dash of lug, and this popped out.

The silk is decently thick and doesn’t have too wild of a sheen to it.  Ties a decent knot too.  Narrower than you’d think but does measure 2 3/4″ at it’s widest point.  A basic, but a good looking one.  Red and yellow stripes also available.

Corduroy Jacket – $24.99 ($69.50)

Will probably fit shorter than most jackets.

One of your least expensive hoodie alternatives.  Hell, one of the least expensive rugby shirts out there period.  For whatever reason it’s awfully hard to find a rugby for under $30.  This one won’t fit as close as a Ralph Lauren custom fit, but then again, it costs one third to a quarter the price of a RL custom fit.

Close to Sebago’s Beacon.  The contrast stitching stands out and while they most likely aren’t quite up to the quality of the Sebago version, they’re certainly cheaper.  Was $75 during the Friends and Family sale.  Use the $10 off code.

Heritage Wool Navy Blazer – $110.99* ($200)

Tradition without the gold buttons.

Not actually in the sale section and who knows why.  For the guys who lean traditional but don’t want that whole goldish brass button look.  Buttons are a matte black metal instead.  Wool, not cotton.  A real honest to goodness traditional type of Navy blazer with a slightly trimmer fit.  Still might need alterations.  And a warning about that trip to your tailor:  The buttons are functional.  *Again, this price reflects the use of the $10 off code at the top of the page.

I get it.  Not everyone likes the contrast stitching.  But be warned… the toe isn’t elongated in the least and the toe box is kinda wide.  So without the stitching, they might look a little blunt.  Available in a deep brown (shown) and black.

No these aren’t for you, but if you’re close to the $50 threshold and want something to tip you over the edge?  Might as well pick up a pair of unique but not too crazy gloves for your wife, girlfriend, or friend who happens to be a woman.  (I know you’re out there ladies.  I got your back.  Or in this case, your forearms and fingers.)   Wool/Cotton/Nylon blend, and the arm length section unbuttons to reveal a standard wrist length glove.

The “suggested retail” price is pretty steep (read, perpetually inflated since it’s Macy’s) but you can almost always find these for at least 40% off.  That drops them to $33 without any coupons or anything.  Here’s what they have going for them:

• They’re a perfect  3″ wide
• The patterns are classic but not stuffy
• The colors are toned down and the stripes are uniform and defined
• Some of them have a real nice texture to them.

The 40% off $33 price point is perfect for Macy’s card holders since you likely get a few coupon cards each month.  One of which is often a $10 off $30 purchase.  That drops the price to a very friendly $23.00.

The makeup on the textured bar stripe ties is a disappointing 57% poly / 35% viscose / 8% wool, but they look much better than you’d think, and definitely have that wool matte look with a slightly rough feel to them.

Ties a real nice knot too.  Keep an eye out in store since they don’t appear to be available online just yet.

This probably comes down to the rule of thirds.  Or, flashbacks to the slow climb up one particular roller coaster as a kid, looking down at the lap bar not reaching all the way across both my legs and thinking:  “how the hell is this going to keep me in here?”  But it always did.

A one and a half inch tie bar is a little more casual than a full width tie bar.  It’s the not quite all the way across width which makes it seem a little more function instead of fashion first:

It’s a matte/brushed silver, and it also happens to be a steal.  It has a good weight to it, doesn’t feel cheap, and usually runs around $20 – $25 at Macy’s if you happen across one on a sale day.  It also comes attached to a tie.  The tie is a too slim for some 2.5″ at it’s widest point, and… it’s all poly.  That’s good because it doesn’t shine.  That’s bad because, some understandably can’t stand polyester ties.  But it’s honestly not about the neckwear this time.

Kudos to TheTieBar.com for having a real nice variety of tie bars for $15.00 plus $5.99 shipping, so if you want something a little larger or even a little smaller, head in that direction.  Otherwise, if you play your cards right, you can get one for around the same price with no waiting.  And it happens to come with a tie.

1. The double breasted trench coat:  B.R. – $134.05* ($225) | Claiborne – $119.99 ($200)

Make sure it fits well too.

It’s not quite overcoat weather, but your lighter jacket won’t cover your blazer.  The answer is a trench.  Don’t be freaked out by the belt, you don’t have to wear it.  Some prefer the single breasted Mac jacket, but those can leave you looking a little boxy.  An ideal fabric would be partially cotton and partially nylon, but the B.R. proves an all poly can look great.

2. A classic umbrella:  Totes Gentleman’s Umbrella – $16.00

Distinguished and under $20.

One of those tiny collapsible umbrellas is okay, but they’re tough to fit two people under.  A gigantic colorful golf umbrella is just comical.  Since these have been available through Macy’s for years at this kind of bargain, there’s no reason not to carry one or stow one in the trunk of your car.  If it looks like rain, take it.  You’ll look better with it in hand.

3. The grey tweedish blazer: Calibrate Trim – $112 ($225) | J. Crew FACTORY – $125* ($178)

Of course brown hued tweed is classic, but a grey leaning charcoal wool or wool mix sport coat is a little cleaner and a little younger.  You can wear it with black pants, khaki chinos (as demonstrated in the Nordstrom photo above) and denim.  The Calibrate just went on sale for 50% off and should be a steal at just over $100.

4. Tougher lace ups:  Kenneth Cole New York “Mind Tricks” – $62.49* ($158)

At $65, a scuff or two is welcome.

Don't be afraid of subtle color.

The Banana Republic Silk Blend v-necks are terrific, but they’re expensive, and the V on those dips drastically low.  For a cheaper cooler weather pick, stick with Merino Wool.  Good from now till April.  It’s lightweight, it’s strong, and has minimal scratch.  Wait for a sale on versions from  J. 9. An upgrade to the hoodie:  American Apparel Rugby – $48 | J. Crew Shawl – $41.65*

Nice bold placket on the Rugby.

There will be weekends where you’ll want to reach for that brick heavy, bulky, alma matter hooded sweatshirt.  Leave it for when you have the flu.  The once beloved Ralph Lauren Custom Fit has skyrocketed to a gag-worthy $100 and the A.A. is half that price.  Shawl collar pullovers are a solid bet too.  Cheaper options:  this, and this.  Both from L.E.C.
