The neck is nice and thick but not bulky, and the knit has that nautical, almost fair isle look to it.  Only unlike fair isle, you get to skip all the wild colors if that’s not your thing.  100% cotton, made in China (no surprise there) and the only logo isn’t visible since it’s on the inside tag.  Authentic looking, incredibly comfortable, oddly masculine, and under forty bucks.  Find one in store by using their locator tool.

Brooks Brothers has somewhat recently gotten killed on their Facebook page by longtime customers complaining about the youthful turn the brand seems to have taken.  No matter that these guys were arguing that Brooks Brothers was looking too young… while they themselves were using Facebook.

Brooks Brothers is trying not to not age themselves out of the market and this sweater is proof.  On sale through Park & Bond, and through Nordstrom the blue one says the fit is “Considered a Trim fit; fitted through the chest, armholes and sides.”  That’s good.  But the orange claims to be a regular fit (see below.)  That’s confusing.

Lambswool and from Brooks Brothers.  Seems like it could be a great way to maximize one of those $40 for $80 vouchers that a few of us picked up from Gilt City back in late October.  Aside from the fit questions, between the bright colors at the cuffs, hem, and collar, are the arm stripes a little over the top?

The Case For Fair Isle: We’re entering a time of year when many of us will be lucky to see the sun more than twice a week.  It’s grey, it’s dark, and so are most of our cold weather clothes.  The Fair Isle knitting pattern was invented on the most remote inhabited island in the U.K.  So they know something about:  A. Staying warm and B. Remaining cheerful enough not to murder each other during the winter months.  It’s casual for sure, but as long as the fit is right it has a workman like feel that delivers a much needed dose of character around this time of year.

The Case Against Fair Isle:  Hooray for color.  Hooray for unexpected jolts of it via our socks.  But this trend towards bigger and brighter colors and patterns is starting to make some grown men look like kindergarteners.  Most Fair Isle looks either musty or childish.  A stray Fair Isle sweater is to hipster fashion as henna tattoos are to real tattoos.  Don’t go halfway.  At best, Fair Isle is wildly busy.  At worst, it looks like Grandma’s living room rug is halfway through giving birth to you.  Not many women have ever said: “look at that sexy guy in the Fair Isle sweater!“  And when they have, you better believe the colors were dark, the fella looked rough, and he was probably sporting a mustache that could have intimidated the pants off Medusa herself.

Ralph Lauren Shawl Collar Stripe Sweater – $59.99 ($115.00)

Stripes but not crazy

Still not cheap for a cotton sweater, but you pay for the pony in some regards.  Shawl collar and stripes at the cuffs and waist keep it from being boring.  Far from it.

Nautica Wool Mix Peacoat – $69.99* ($250)

Size shown: Medium.

Not incredibly thick but not flimsy either.  Closer at the sides than most Nautica stuff, but you can still sneak plenty of layers in underneath.  Quilted interior and that perfect mid thigh length.  Here’s an up close view.  Part of the best affordable outerwear feature, and it’s hard to imagine the $70 price tag getting any lower.

Tallia Wool & Cashmere Flannel Suit – $219.99 ($650)

Could be a total steal. Minus the shirt.

First, not for beginners or minimalists.  Second, that shirt on the model ain’t the best play.  Claims to be a wool/cashmere blend and flannel at that.  Could be very British looking if you lose the nuclear shirt.

Calvin Klein Warren Suede Chukka – $99.99* ($125)

Ships free and returns free in store.

Calvin Klein shoes are more form than function, but a few of us have pairs that continue to hold up well over time.  Available in a black suede, deep navy suede, and this hard not to like charcoal suede.

INC Slim Fit Cord Blazer – $59.99 ($99.50)

Also available in grey and black.

Macy’s and GAP must be taking a reverse psychology route when it comes to their online photos for their blazers.  They just drape these things over the models and they look lifeless.  This blazer from INC is a slim fit that might need only minor alterations if you’re in good shape.  A new favorite.

Club Room Merino V-Neck – $27.99 ($70.00)

So if you want a canary yellow sweater...

These are true Club Room, not “CR by Club Room” so the fit will be pretty boxy.  Closer to Alfani than Alfani Red for sure.  If you’re real slim leaning skinny, consider forgetting it despite the sub $30 price tag.  Head in store and try a size down if you can.  Tons of colors.

Dockers Alpha Khaki – $39.99 ($68.00)

Slim and different.

A warning on these: plenty have said that they fit real slim.  So if you’ve got bigger legs or any weight on you, might be best to stay away.  Under $40 is a price that even Dockers themselves couldn’t match during their Khaki event from a few weeks back.

Hilfiger Color Block Sweater & Ranger Crew Neck – $94.98 w/ TOMMY ($196)

Save another $25 when bought together.

Those are the prices if you buy both of them together.  The code TOMMY takes $25 off Hilfiger purchases over $100, and these two wool blend sweaters could easily be a well loved foundation to your casual sweater lineup.  No word on fit though, but they do return free in-store.  Barely shy of the $99 free shipping mark.  The color block sweater is just different enough without going full Fair Isle.  And more on Fair Isle tomorrow…

Bar III Elliot Stripe Tie – $26.99 ($39.50)

Limited colors + herringbone texture + stripes = well done.

Not to completely channel the Beach Boys, but wouldn’t it be nice to know the width of these things?  Bar III is a Macy’s house brand that leans pretty young.  So be careful here, they might be razor thin.

Club Room Estate Gingham Shirt - $12.99 ($39.50)

Cheap enough to spring for tailoring.

Description says it’s “oxford woven” but it looks awfully poplin-like from this end of the internet.  Dirt cheap.  Maybe worth picking up if you’re close to the free shipping threshold and don’t want to spring for the UPS man.

Tommy Hilfiger Tuxedo Jacket and Tuxedo Pant – $234.98 w/ TOMMY

Own it. Not rent.

If you’ve got some fancy black tie affair coming up during the holidays, now’s the time to strongly consider investing in your own tux.  That way, if you do decide to take the plunge and shed those awful rental tuxedos for the rest of your life, you’ll have plenty of time to get it tailored to your exact specifications.  The Hilfiger trim fit tux should have you looking 100x better than anyone in a rental.  An extra $25 off with the code TOMMY.  Also available in the more traditional peak lapel, as well as a shawl collar if that’s your thing.

One hell of a blend.

Can a watch with any sort of digital readout look refined?  Probably not, but this might be as close as it gets.  Eco drive power system means it never needs a battery, the white stitching on the band is a great touch, and it looks like it has all the options you could want or need.  Macy’s claims it’s an exclusive, and it sure seems to be.

The Case Against Cashmere: Yes it’s more difficult to produce.  Yes you have to comb a goat to get it.  Yes it’s extremely soft.  All that extra work?  No doubt it should be more expensive.  But honestly, why pay for it?  The performance to cost ratio is way out of whack.  It might feel a little better, but merino or a silk/cotton/cashmere blend feels pretty good too.  Maybe if it’s right on your skin, but are there people out there who put a merino v-neck over a button up shirt and feel like they’re in a burlap sack?  With all apologies to the denim heads out there, cashmere is the selvage of the wool world.  Well appreciated by few (and more power to em’) but a waste of money for most.

The Case For Cashmere: Well, your significant other seems to like it when they get a scarf or pair of gloves that’s made of cashmere.  Right?  And why buy her a diamond if a cubic zirconia looks the same?  And… uh… honestly, that’s all I got fellas.

Now remember, no one is making you drop a ton of cash on a cashmere sweater, and people get to spend their money how they so choose.  Leave your take on whether or not cashmere is worth the premium below.

Really, really cheap.

At this price you’ve got to wonder if one day you’ll be walking through an airport, all of the seams will give way at once, and your belongings will go rocketing out onto the concourse forcing you to leave your bags unattended (TSA will have your rear for that) so you can pick up your gear that landed half way into some overpriced generic t-shirt shop.  Or maybe they’re built just fine, and with decent care they’ll last plenty long.  Looks great for the price.

The FACTORY solid merino might be one of the best, most affordable sweaters of the year (they’re plenty smooth and fit decently through the sides with a close to perfect V depth) but the fact that you can get a striped version, or, a warmer more casual Lambswool crewneck for around the same price is certainly worth a mention.  Over generalized sweater fabric breakdown utilizing NES Ice Hockey player types can be found here.

J. Crew Selvedge Twill Sportcoat:  Black – $139.99 | Navy – $104.99* ($278)

A 3-button fall INC ultra light upgrade?

This could have made an interesting “would you wear it” item.  Has an interesting look to it.  Ludlow fit, but the lapels on the black in the photos look even skinnier.  *NOTE:  This one is weird because the Navy is a FINAL sale (no returns), while the black appears not to be.  Limited Sizes available in the Navy.

J. Crew Sherpa Lined Fleece Jacket – $61.60 ($98.00)

"Bottle or draft?" "Got a can?"

Has a bit of a Carhartt look to it.  Now available closer to a Carhartt price with the code.  Proof that clothes which would look most appropriate raking leaves don’t have to look terrible.

J. Crew Point Collar Gorham Check Dress Shirt – $41.65 ($79.50)

Gorham? I barely know him.

Down to a reasonable price and available in neck and sleeve measurements.  Speaking of, a good size selection is available but count on them to move pretty quick.  Maybe.

J. Crew Suede Bucks in Grey - $90.99 ($165)

Depending on color, Bucks can work outside of summer.

These are a final sale item.  Barring any particularly nasty weather, you can pull off bucks during this time of year as long as they aren’t gleaming white.  “Rockface grey” which is the color these claim to be, should do just fine.

Many if not most of the best looking pieces of classic menswear have evolved from military dress.  And that makes sense.  Military uniforms have always helped give the wearer a strong look while remaining functional.  Land was never defended and empires were never conquered by men wearing snuggies and crocs.

The military is also a bastion of discipline.  And frugality is one subset of discipline.  Good looks, low cost, and the quality needed to keep up with a soldier’s use is a pretty solid combination.  Lucky for us, the manufactures of these goods are happy to sell off the leftovers to us civilians.  Five items to look for follow, with pricing examples found during a field trip to the surplus store closest to the Dappered home offices.

#1 Hats and Scarves: Wool Scarf – $5.97, Wool Watch Cap – $5.97

You can get used to a little itch. (Depending on where it's at.)

Stunningly inexpensive.  The scarves are probably the best bet and the quality of the wool is second to none.  The watch caps are obviously plain, but the wool is thick, warm, and will keep you from losing too much heat even if they get wet.  The hats are pretty bulky and will itch more than most other hats.

#2 Sweaters:  Acrylic Commando Sweater – $34.97 (wool will be a little more)

Casual for sure, but great all the same.

You probably won’t find a sweater you can wear to the office, but weekend sweaters (especially if you like to get outdoors on your time off) are easily had for $50 and under.  Everything from bulky wool sweaters made to take a beating, to slim fit commando style sweaters with shoulder and elbow patches.

#3 Boots of most shapes and sizes:  Logger Boots – $95.97

Slim boots won't be found here.

You’re not as likely to find a boot that’s slim through the toe (and thus would be easy to dress up with a blazer and jeans) but if you want real tough boots made of good quality leather, than one of the best places to find the lowest price is at a surplus store.

#4 Wool Pants:  Made in Canada Wool Pants – $24.97

Scares the hell out of flimsy microfiber dress pants.

These aren’t suiting wool by any stretch.  This is the real deal.  Thick, flannel type stuff.  Tough as well.  You should be able to find pants from the US, Canada, Germany, and all over the globe.  Cuts can vary, but for an initial cost of around $25 then a trip to the tailor is a small extra investment.

#5 Wool Peacoats:  Short Style – $139.97,  Long Style Bridge Coat – $159.97

As authentic as it gets.

The sign above says “finest quality” and they’re not kidding.  These are the real thing.  75% wool with some nylon mixed in to keep the water from soaking through.  The longer coat does look a little costumey with the buttons, and it’s probably not the best idea to wear that around unless you’re actually in the service.  But a tailor can easily replace those with something more subtle.  Both are made in the USA.

BONUS  #6 Thick Leather Jackets: Full Grain Leather Jacket – $129.97

Not flimsy at all.

Pretty sure this jacket weighed at least 10 pounds.  You’ll find plenty of odd finds and other unusual stuff in surplus stores.  You might have to sacrifice a little when it comes to looks, but expect a lot when it comes to the quality.

Darting in the back means it should be more fitted.  Length looks to be close to perfect.  Not an easy color to find a double breasted coat in.  Under $200 with the sale and ships free.  You’re on the hook for return shipping.

Kenneth Cole New York 5-Pocket Plaid Pant – $48.65 ($69.50)

Just odd enough.

Straight leg, cotton, and a not too out-there plaid pattern.  All slapped on a cotton pant with a  5-pocket jean-like layout.  Haven’t seen them in person but they look like they could be winners.  Shipping is a decently low $4 flat rate if you’re not spending over the $100 free shipping threshold.

Kenneth Cole New York Cross My Mind Boot – $111.99 ($215)

Styling = simple but very, very effective.

Was on sale for $160 and now an extra 30% off that price.  Drops them to almost half retail and just above $100.  Ships free as well.  The cap toe makes it look like a sleeker more dressed up version of the Timberland 6″ city zip.  Still not a dress boot though.  A hybrid that lands somewhere in between.

Kenneth Cole New York Regal King – $103.60 ($148.00)

Not Allen Edmonds. In any way.

The round toe purists have never liked these.  But if you like a slightly elongated toe, and you can stand a bit of a rounded corner chisel at the end, then for just north of $100 it’ll be hard to do better.  Ships free and just barely.  Surprised they didn’t mark it down a few bucks more to nail you with shipping charges.  Full review here.

Banana Republic Merino Wool V-Neck – $41.65 ($59.50)

Best sweater so far this year?

Most of you guys know about the appreciation this website has for Banana Republic’s silk/cotton/cashmere v-necks.  They’ve been #1 for awhile despite their too deep V.  It’s time to crown a new champ.  This year’s BR merino v-necks are the perfect balance between:

1. Weight – Not tissue thin, not bulky at all.
2. Depth of V – It dips, but not wildly low.
3. Width of collar ribbing – more substantial than the silk/cotton/cashmere blend.

They also fit decently close but not tight.  And now at 30% off, they’re a bargain at $40.  Well done BR.

Banana Republic Silk/Cotton/Cashmere V-Neck – $48.65 ($69.50)

Still very much appreciated.

As stated right up there ^  now #2 but a close second.  It’s really hard to beat the smoothness of the fabric on these.  And they’re awfully strong and wear well.  The V just dips a little too deep and they’re an extra $10 retail.

Banana Republic Full-Button Cardigan – $62.65 ($89.50)

Not quite as fitted in real life.

You see those two dents in the professional model’s sides in the pic on the left?  Looks like the stylist didn’t smooth out the impact of the close-pin, chip clip, or whatever it is they’re using to gather extra fabric at the back.  These are a bit boxy.  But if you happen to be a bit boxy yourself and want a cardigan that’s no fly-weight weakling, these are reinforced through the neck and placket and have a good but not too heavy weight to them.

Banana Republic Tweed V-Neck – $62.65 ($89.50)

Going to be your topmost layer.

If the other V-necks are soup, then this one is a stew.  Thick, chunky, and you won’t be comfortable with a blazer over it.  Just like stew.  No one likes a blazer over their stew.  A more noticeable knit with flecks in the fabric.  Warm and substantial, and not all that close fitting at the sides.

UPDATE:  This has been a bit of a cluster.  After their facebook page wrecked over the weekend not allowing many to get the code for the sale, the Bonobos website apparently crashed this morning when the sale went live.  Stock appears to have been decimated, and with their switch to a new platform it’s no longer immediately clear what sizes are still available.  That wasn’t the case with the old platform.  Overall reaction to the sale on Facebook / Twitter hasn’t been real friendly, which is no surprise.  Leave your take in the comments below…

Ss close as you’re going to get to the now seemingly defunct 5-pocket canvas pant from Banana Republic.  Their Bull Denim is, wait for it… denim… but not so heavy that they’re not easy to move in.  Plus you get the Bonobos fit, shipping, and customer service.

Makes me almost wish I was a Bears fan.  Almost (*cough* go Packers.)  Anyway, orange and blue is a not used nearly enough color combination.  Cotton / Merino wool blend should be ideal.  Stripes go to the back as well.

Wolverine Clapton Boot – $77.50 ($155)

$155 is a lot, but under $80 seems like a deal.

No they’re not from the Wolverine 1000 mile collection, but they appear to be much better looking than the $80 (for today only) price tag.  Casual yes, but upgraded casual if you keep them polished and looking good.

If you don’t live in the sun belt, you’re going to want a couple of things with some color for the upcoming fall and winter.  After the 9th day in a row of nothing but clouds, wearing a white shirt under a black sweater & wool grey pants might put you over the edge.  This is the answer.  Would look perfect with a grey tweed sportcoat.
