25% off at BR with BRBETTER | 25% off GAP with GAPTICTOK

Banana Republic code expires today, 5/2. Gap code expires 5/3. Notice the spelling in the GAP code, so don’t spell it correctly and then wonder why it’s not working. Free shipping kicks in at $50 as always.

Broken record time. When it comes to the GAP inc brands, 25% off is good. 30% off is real good. Anything above that and it’s rare. So at first glance this looks just… good. But there are a few advantages this one has over other 25% off sales:

You can combine orders from GAP and BR to get to the $50 free shipping threshold

Unlike the past few codes, regular suiting is NOT excluded this time (Monogram suiting is though)

There’s some new arrivals and new sale section additions worth a look for both brands.

BR Blazers have been flying off the virtual internet shelves as of late. This is a brand new arrival, and haven’t seen it in store yet. Intriguing, and it could be the perfect blazer for a Kentucky Derby Party if you pop for express shipping (which, not many of us would ever do). The close up on the fabric is interesting. They say it’s pique? Like it’s woven such as this sweater/sweatshirt/blazer hybrid looking thing? Doubtful. Looks much more like a standard cotton BR blazer with a bit of structure, and it’s priced that way too.

Is skin to sweater fair? Or is torso commando nasty?

.
The Case For Wearing a Sweater Over Nothing: This is about follicles and fabric makeup. If you’re spending the cash on cashmere, then by all means wear your sweater without anything between you and that luxury. An itchy lambswool is a complete no-go. And if you’re sprouting amber, coarse black, or blonde waves-of-chest-grain at the neck, then no, you don’t want to be putting that on display. Like a V-neck t-shirt, the lower the dip in the V the riskier it gets. But if it’s the right material and you’re not a wooly mammoth, then why not?

The Case Against Wearing a Sweater Over Nothing: The thing about sweaters is that they’ll often be worn multiple times (or a lot more) between washing. When they’re used exclusively as a layering piece, yet never as the base layer, that’s just fine. When they’re right up in your pits, it’s kinda nasty. Even if you do hand wash or have your sweaters cleaned after every wearing, to some… it still looks… gigoloish. A v-neck over nothing is sort of boggling. You think a suit and high collar shirt looks weird tieless? Unlike that, a sweater over nothing flies in the face of conventional layering theory: Thinner layers on the bottom, thicker stuff on top. Sweater on skin skips ahead. It’s a bit like an El Camino. You see it and something is just terribly and completely off about it.

Your turn guys. Gross? Excellent? Somewhere in between? Your vote and reasoning goes in the comments.

Full retail at Rugby is high. This is not. An extra 25% off sale items.

Rugby’s Extra 25% off Last Call Sale event – No code needed

Spring lines are starting to hit stores and the web. Weird. Winter clearance events have been going on since we flipped from 11 to 2012. And this is the last of it. Sizes are running short, and stock is getting in low supply. Efforts have been made to keep the picks within a decent size range, but know that can change quickly.

Free shipping doesn’t kick in till $125, and the extra 25% off comes once you dump the item in your cart…
.

Rugby Shetland Wool Elbow Patch Crewneck – $37.49 ($98.00)

A big time casual upgrade.

Down to four color options and sizes are scattered. Camel, Grey, and Navy are the standard do anything colors left. And then there’s yellow. Which no doubt, some of you can pull off.

Black/Grey Herringbone vest – $74.99 ($178)

Did you two call each other or something?

Was pushing $180. Ouch. Now down to $75 which is a decent price. What makes it is the tweedy looking front, with a cotton instead of silk/poly back. Less shine = good.

Surcingle Striped Cotton/Leather Belt in red – $18.74 or green – $24.99 ($59.50)

Now or never.

The red is the only one that gets the extra 25% off treatment. But $25 seems awfully fair for the more versatile green. Sizes are starting to get limited, so now would be the time if you’ve been waiting to pounce. Again, free shipping doesn’t kick in till $125, so if this is the one and only purchase, you’ll get dinged hard on that.

Shawl Fleece Pullover – $52.49 ($128)

Like wearing a detail buffet. At least there's no logo?

There is a LOT going on with this thing. Too much for most. There’s the ribbed collar and cuffs, the stripes, and the reinforced quilting on the shoulders, which looks an awful like those shoulders on the big brother brand’s custom fit RL rugby. Skip the grey with the obnoxious logo. The black doesn’t seem to have it.

Chesterfield Overcoat – $172.49 ($429)

Not bad looking for under $200.

Male, black tie event attendees are supposed to show up in a Chesterfield Top Coat. It’s the traditional coat to be worn with a tux, and not many of us have that many occasions to worry about that kind of thing. But this one has the velvet back collar and the ticket pocket is a nice touch. An investment. Sizes are getting short quick.

Checkered Card Case – $35.00

Can I castle on this thing?

Actually, not an extra 25% off and not even one of their sale items. Instead it’s a new arrival. One of those cracks of color that a minimalist might like to have in his pocket and bring out every once in awhile when paying.

Striped Cashmere Scarf – $63.74 ($148)

Gettin' there.

The pattern is awesome. It’s cashmere. But it’s still over sixty bucks for a scarf. Hemming. Hawing.

Tartan Newbury Jacket – $127.49 ($398)

Ignore the auxilliary hyper prep noise.

You knew this was going to be here. Not everyone’s favorite. But it’s tempting for a lot of us now. Ships free too since it’s just above the $125 threshold.

The extra 25% off select sale items sale ends at… actually, they aren’t saying. So who knows…

*UPDATE: Use code 39427841 for the discounted price. These were gone off the web. But they’re back in a few sizes. Free shipping through Tuesday as well. Price above reflects the online price. If you’re heading in-store, they might be a little more. Use their item locator tool here. Discount is a part of their 40% off sweaters promotion, which is running online and in store through Tues. 12/13.

If you’re over the age of 25, you’ll probably feel a little out of place walking into an American Eagle store. But this is worth it. Currently 40% off through Tuesday 12/13, it’s cotton, it’s warm, it’s thick, and despite looking like it could be too generous through the sides when sprawled out on the ground, it actually fits pretty trim in person.
.

.
The neck is nice and thick but not bulky, and the knit has that nautical, almost fair isle look to it. Only unlike fair isle, you get to skip all the wild colors if that’s not your thing. 100% cotton, made in China (no surprise there) and the only logo isn’t visible since it’s on the inside tag. Authentic looking, incredibly comfortable, oddly masculine, and under forty bucks. Find one in store by using their locator tool.

A real young looking sweater from a not so young brand.

Brooks Brothers Lambswool V-Neck – $56.00 ($79.50)

*Or, even cheaper if you picked up the $40 for $80 Park & Bond voucher a few weeks back.

Brooks Brothers has somewhat recently gotten killed on their Facebook page by longtime customers complaining about the youthful turn the brand seems to have taken. No matter that these guys were arguing that Brooks Brothers was looking too young… while they themselves were using Facebook.

Brooks Brothers is trying not to not age themselves out of the market and this sweater is proof. On sale through Park & Bond, and through Nordstrom the blue one says the fit is “Considered a Trim fit; fitted through the chest, armholes and sides.” That’s good. But the orange claims to be a regular fit (see below.) That’s confusing.

Lambswool and from Brooks Brothers. Seems like it could be a great way to maximize one of those $40 for $80 vouchers that a few of us picked up from Gilt City back in late October. Aside from the fit questions, between the bright colors at the cuffs, hem, and collar, are the arm stripes a little over the top?

Leave your take below, and whether or not you think it’s worth a look at full price, $56, $40, or not at all.

The Case For Fair Isle: We’re entering a time of year when many of us will be lucky to see the sun more than twice a week. It’s grey, it’s dark, and so are most of our cold weather clothes. The Fair Isle knitting pattern was invented on the most remote inhabited island in the U.K. So they know something about: A. Staying warm and B. Remaining cheerful enough not to murder each other during the winter months. It’s casual for sure, but as long as the fit is right it has a workman like feel that delivers a much needed dose of character around this time of year.

The Case Against Fair Isle: Hooray for color. Hooray for unexpected jolts of it via our socks. But this trend towards bigger and brighter colors and patterns is starting to make some grown men look like kindergarteners. Most Fair Isle looks either musty or childish. A stray Fair Isle sweater is to hipster fashion as henna tattoos are to real tattoos. Don’t go halfway. At best, Fair Isle is wildly busy. At worst, it looks like Grandma’s living room rug is halfway through giving birth to you. Not many women have ever said: “look at that sexy guy in the Fair Isle sweater!“ And when they have, you better believe the colors were dark, the fella looked rough, and he was probably sporting a mustache that could have intimidated the pants off Medusa herself.

Are you on board with Fair Isle? Or are you sticking with solids, stripes and maybe argyle? Leave your take below.

As always, it’s incredibly tough to peg when Macy’s will launch a One Day Sale. Sometimes a month and a half will go by between them, sometimes only a few weeks will pass. One thing is certain: These are sales worth paying attention to. The one-day sale prices are some of the best mark downs in the retail industry. Here’s some of the best from the One-Day-Sale which runs Tues. November 15 – Wed. November 16. Items marked with a * are “Web Busters.” In store prices may or may not match up. Selection on all items (especially shoes) in store can vary greatly.

Macy’s and GAP must be taking a reverse psychology route when it comes to their online photos for their blazers. They just drape these things over the models and they look lifeless. This blazer from INC is a slim fit that might need only minor alterations if you’re in good shape. A new favorite.

Those are the prices if you buy both of them together. The code TOMMY takes $25 off Hilfiger purchases over $100, and these two wool blend sweaters could easily be a well loved foundation to your casual sweater lineup. No word on fit though, but they do return free in-store. Barely shy of the $99 free shipping mark. The color block sweater is just different enough without going full Fair Isle. And more on Fair Isle tomorrow…

*Use the code SAVE to get these prices and 15% off most stuff at L&T. No experience with their sweater fit though…

The Case Against Cashmere: Yes it’s more difficult to produce. Yes you have to comb a goat to get it. Yes it’s extremely soft. All that extra work? No doubt it should be more expensive. But honestly, why pay for it? The performance to cost ratio is way out of whack. It might feel a little better, but merino or a silk/cotton/cashmere blend feels pretty good too. Maybe if it’s right on your skin, but are there people out there who put a merino v-neck over a button up shirt and feel like they’re in a burlap sack? With all apologies to the denim heads out there, cashmere is the selvage of the wool world. Well appreciated by few (and more power to em’) but a waste of money for most.

The Case For Cashmere: Well, your significant other seems to like it when they get a scarf or pair of gloves that’s made of cashmere. Right? And why buy her a diamond if a cubic zirconia looks the same? And… uh… honestly, that’s all I got fellas.

Now remember, no one is making you drop a ton of cash on a cashmere sweater, and people get to spend their money how they so choose. Leave your take on whether or not cashmere is worth the premium below.

Use code OURTREAT for an extra 30% off J. Crew Sale + Factory

Code expires Thursday October 27th. Watch yourself on those “final sale” items which can’t be returned.

Indeed we just did this. It was only a few weeks ago that J. Crew ran one of these extra 30% off Sale / Factory codes, and it was then that it seemed as if this would become a once a month thing. And now they’ve gone and done it twice this month. ‘kay. Part trick and part treat maybe.

The good news is that we all get an extra 30% off if we’re in the market for something like the items below. The bad news is that the next time you want something from J. Crew’s lower FACTORY line, you’re probably best waiting for one of these sales. Lots of new stuff from Factory, and all items from Factory ship free…
.

5 great looking items you can find at your military surplus store.

Five great looking items you can find at a Military Surplus Store

Many if not most of the best looking pieces of classic menswear have evolved from military dress. And that makes sense. Military uniforms have always helped give the wearer a strong look while remaining functional. Land was never defended and empires were never conquered by men wearing snuggies and crocs.

The military is also a bastion of discipline. And frugality is one subset of discipline. Good looks, low cost, and the quality needed to keep up with a soldier’s use is a pretty solid combination. Lucky for us, the manufactures of these goods are happy to sell off the leftovers to us civilians. Five items to look for follow, with pricing examples found during a field trip to the surplus store closest to the Dappered home offices.
.

#1 Hats and Scarves: Wool Scarf – $5.97, Wool Watch Cap – $5.97

You can get used to a little itch. (Depending on where it's at.)

Stunningly inexpensive. The scarves are probably the best bet and the quality of the wool is second to none. The watch caps are obviously plain, but the wool is thick, warm, and will keep you from losing too much heat even if they get wet. The hats are pretty bulky and will itch more than most other hats.

#2 Sweaters: Acrylic Commando Sweater – $34.97 (wool will be a little more)

Casual for sure, but great all the same.

You probably won’t find a sweater you can wear to the office, but weekend sweaters (especially if you like to get outdoors on your time off) are easily had for $50 and under. Everything from bulky wool sweaters made to take a beating, to slim fit commando style sweaters with shoulder and elbow patches.

#3 Boots of most shapes and sizes: Logger Boots – $95.97

Slim boots won't be found here.

You’re not as likely to find a boot that’s slim through the toe (and thus would be easy to dress up with a blazer and jeans) but if you want real tough boots made of good quality leather, than one of the best places to find the lowest price is at a surplus store.

#4 Wool Pants: Made in Canada Wool Pants – $24.97

Scares the hell out of flimsy microfiber dress pants.

These aren’t suiting wool by any stretch. This is the real deal. Thick, flannel type stuff. Tough as well. You should be able to find pants from the US, Canada, Germany, and all over the globe. Cuts can vary, but for an initial cost of around $25 then a trip to the tailor is a small extra investment.

#5 Wool Peacoats: Short Style – $139.97, Long Style Bridge Coat – $159.97

As authentic as it gets.

The sign above says “finest quality” and they’re not kidding. These are the real thing. 75% wool with some nylon mixed in to keep the water from soaking through. The longer coat does look a little costumey with the buttons, and it’s probably not the best idea to wear that around unless you’re actually in the service. But a tailor can easily replace those with something more subtle. Both are made in the USA.

BONUS #6 Thick Leather Jackets: Full Grain Leather Jacket – $129.97

Not flimsy at all.

Pretty sure this jacket weighed at least 10 pounds. You’ll find plenty of odd finds and other unusual stuff in surplus stores. You might have to sacrifice a little when it comes to looks, but expect a lot when it comes to the quality.

A sincere thank you to all the Dappered readers who have served or are currently serving in the military. The enormous benefits we run of the mill civilians get to take advantage of thanks to your sacrifice are greatly appreciated. And know that most of us realize those benefits go way beyond a stray watch cap or peacoat.
