Rugby Chino Newbury Jacket – $112.49 ($198)

Great, but too much of a heavyweight for summer.

So here’s the deal with this jacket.  It was going to be given a full rundown with the matching pant as a summer suit, but it’s about 25% too heavy to be worn in real heat.  It’s terrific, but the fabric is so thick that you’ll feel like you’re wearing a blanket above 85.  Awesome for spring, fall, and even winter.  Three button front with a great natural lapel lay so it wears like a 2-button.  Great off the rack fit and plenty will be able to get away without extra tailoring.  Functioning cuff buttons, but sleeves run normal.

Rugby Italian Made Madras Tie – $49.99 ($69.50)

Broken record time.  When it comes to the GAP inc brands, 25% off is good.  30% off is real good.  Anything above that and it’s rare.  So at first glance this looks just… good.  But there are a few advantages this one has over other 25% off sales:

Banana Republic Corbin Sunglasses – $58.50($78)

Thick, but not too chunky/casual for plastic frames

Part of the best sunglasses under $100 list.  Real nice for the price.  They’re more substantial than Ray-Ban new wayfarers for sure, and will look best on guys with larger heads and faces.  Well proportioned, rectangular lenses, and pretty comfortable.  Ships free, and should return free in store like everything else.

Banana Republic Chino/Linen Suit Separates - $285 ($380)

Banana Republic Blue Pique Cotton Tailored Fit Blazer - $148.50 ($198)

Bit of a mystery here.

BR Blazers have been flying off the virtual internet shelves as of late.  This is a brand new arrival, and haven’t seen it in store yet.  Intriguing, and it could be the perfect blazer for a Kentucky Derby Party if you pop for express shipping (which, not many of us would ever do).  The close up on the fabric is interesting.  They say it’s pique?  Like it’s woven such as this sweater/sweatshirt/blazer hybrid looking thing?  Doubtful.  Looks much more like a standard cotton BR blazer with a bit of structure, and it’s priced that way too.

Banana Republic Cotton Cashmere Sweater in Grey – $26.24 ($59.50)

Already on sale with a few more color options available for a little less money, or, a little more.  This color has the most sizes.  Well reviewed online.  90% cotton, 10% cashmere, handwash or dryclean only, and a v-neck that doesn’t look to dip as deep as the silk/cotton/cashmere V-necks.

Banana Republic Striped Tailored Slim 8.25″ Short – $40.88 ($54.40)

Forty bucks seems like a lot for a pair of shorts, doesn’t it?  But if you’re the type that doesn’t wear shorts a lot, and needs maybe a pair or two to successfully get through the summer, maybe you want that pair to be a perfect, lightweight, wearable without a belt pair like these.  Sometimes a leather belt (or even a cotton belt) feels a little heavy in the summer.  The side tabs here solve that problem.  Ships free.  Shorter 8 1/4″ rise.

GAP Quilted Knit Jacket – $32.99 ($79.95)

Like a baseball jacket & Carhartt had a baby.

This is all in how you wear it.  Throw it on over a light v-neck with jeans and you’ll look real relaxed.  Wear it with plaid shorts and a deep v-neck tee and you’ll look like a dirt bag.  Looks a little like something you might find in a thrift store.  Now thirty bucks.

Similar, but so very not.

Not the same shirt.  The one on the left is more of a dress shirt, with the oxford being made of, well, oxford cloth.  Thicker than a poplin.  The 1969 line seems to run slimmer than you’d think, so be warned there.  Who knows on this shirt though.  Both are already on sale.

Best in show from the Palooza

One of if not the best non-solid polo this year.  Big fan of the collar.  Didn’t shrink in the wash.  Has some good stretch to it, placket falls perfectly with two buttons undone, collar behaves pretty well.  Three colors to pick from and if you get two they’ll ship free.  Part of the polo palooza.

GAP :GAP Tailored Cotton/Linen Blazer – $96.00 ($128)

Looks good, could be great.

First popped up during last week’s handful.  Hasn’t arrived in all brick & mortars yet.  65% cotton / 35% linen and the up close zoom shot seems to show some good texture.  The deeper earth-tone means it’ll work just fine with jeans now, and all the way through and into the cool weather.

L.E.C. 5″ Clean Board Shorts – $35.00 ($50)

Nice work LEC.

The steal of the sale by far.  Hits all the right points:

• Has a liner (hooray for some control)
• Not too long (might be a little short for some at 5″)
• Three good colors to pick from
• No elastic at the waist.

Those side tabs are a real nice detail that’ll come in handy.  These also come in exact waist sizes instead of small, medium, and large.  Nice.  Swim trunks are not cheap.  These have solid potential at this price.

L.E.C. Costal Rugby – $42.00 ($60)

Is $42 out of your price range?

Sixty bucks seems steep for an LEC rugby, and the sale price of $42 seems like what these would have started out at a year or two ago.  But prices are up everywhere, and the details on this one look to be right on.  Big fan of that khaki collar and the stripes.  It certainly appears to have a better look than say, the Merona Rugby which goes for $24.  But is it that much better?

L.E.C. Beachside Linen Shorts – $31.50 ($45) + Key Fob – $6.28 ($8.97)

And the fob is free.

A combo only created when the only code was free shipping at $50.  Shipping for just the shorts was $8.95.  Add the leather key fob and you get shipping for free.  Adding it would have saved you a couple bucks.  Shorts look real good for thirty.  100% linen, a 9″ inseam, and a few colors and patterns to choose from.

L.E.C. Crosby Moc Toe Boot – $37.08 ($149)

Half a year in, still going strong.

Obligatory.  And now they’re practically giving them away.  Some wouldn’t take them for free, but there are those of us that have had a tremendous experience with these Alden-Indy-Like boots.  The leather won’t impress shoe snobs by any stretch, but it’s durable.  As un-summery a pair of shoes gets this side of Sorels.  Too hot for over 75 degrees.

The description of the polo is a little confusing, because the word “jersey” is in there, yet so is “pique.”  Looks to be pique.  Nice contrast at the placket.  For the tie, if there was ever a tie to wear with a khaki colored chino suit, this is probably it.  Even if it is wool.  That juxtaposition of fabrics will look great.  Started out at almost $70 retail.  Ouch.  Down to $10 on the Lands’ End site.  $7 with the promo and ships free.  (Update:  Sorry guys, the tie is gone…)

 L.E.C. Nailhead Oxford Blazer - $17.48 ($99.50) + Supima V – $20.99 ($60)

$40 for both.

The Nailhead Oxford Blazer, which is far from perfect (a little stiff, needs tailoring, but now under $20) is on clearance.  The Supima V in green is not.  It’s just on sale.  Down to $29.99 (see?  no $.97).  Code drops the combo to a kinda ridiculous $40, give or take with taxes.  Credit Brian with the tip on the blazer.

L.E.C. Casual Vest – $48.99 ($100)

Like a blazer, keeps your shirt in line.

Already marked down to $70, and the extra 30% gets it under $50.  Not cheap by any means, but if you’re the waistcoat type (or, uh… vest-curious) this is a good place to start.  Cotton and no silk/poly/shined up back.  Chambray instead.

L.E.C. 1963 Waxed Canvas Trip Bag – $98.00 ($140)

Over 3000 cubic inches of space.

Glad they’re still making this thing.  Actually repels water and feels heavy, but not brick beastly.  Lots of room instead.  A real good option for guys who don’t like how fancy some men’s weekenders can get, but still want something better looking than a nylon duffel.

Lands’ End Tailored Fit Seersucker Suit Jacket & Pants – $203.00 ($290)

Giddyup.

Well… the Derby is coming up quick.  Haven’t seen it in person.  Not from LEC, but Lands’ End.  Says it’s a tailored fit, but will probably need some extra tailoring.  Sleeves and upper back are lined.  100% cotton.

GAP “Lightweight Heather” Polo – $26.21 ($34.95) + Cotton Belt – $14.96 (19.95)

Two better than average basics for $41 shipped.

The polo was part of the recent Polo Palooza and was probably best-in-show.  Nice trim fit and the different rugby-style collar is a great touch.  Three colors to pick from.  The belt comes in four colors and the colored web style has become a summer casual standard for guys.  Rivets make sure it won’t slip throughout the day.  $41.17 for the pair post code.  But remember, they ship free thanks to the duo passing the $50 threshold pre-code.

GAP Ticket Pocket Tailored Cotton Blazer – $81.00 ($108)

Size shown left: 38R. Be prepared to size up.

A sub-$100 light grey workhorse for the spring and even summer months.  Comes in a pre-contoured “tailored” fit, and be prepared to size up if you’re inbetween sizes.  Pic on the left shows a 38R, but the smart decision for me was a 40R with some post purchase tailoring.  A nice mix of dressed up and down. It’s smoother than a rumpled chino, but it’s still cotton. Pockets do NOT have flaps, so the ticket pocket is real subtle. Center vent.

 

GAP Denim Washed slim fit garment dye khakis – $44.96 ($59.95)

Sing it with me: One of these things has a BMI over 20...

For what seemed like awhile, these new denim washed garment dye khakis were excluded from sales.  That’s not the case anymore, for now.  TONS of colors.  Bright ones too for those jumping on that bandwagon.  A warning:  They’re awfully slim from the knee down.  Lots of taper.  Nails otherwise, and lots of you seem to dig that.  Button fly and rave reviews on gap.com.  Full review here.

 

GAP Tailored Glen Plaid Pant in Straight Fit – $44.63 ($59.50)

The calves. They're comfy.

Yay.  STRAIGHT FIT.  Which means:  Closer to a 501 cut from the knee down.  Forget the tube sock taper for those with larger calves.  Subtle glen plaid pattern.  Work appropriate but don’t be afraid to pair a polo with them on the (gasp) weekend.

 

GAP Slim fit non iron plaid shirt – $26.24 ($59.95) + Reversible Belt – $14.99 ($39.95)

Couple of freaks these two. Or not.

Both of these are already on sale for a sizeable reduction.  Add on top of that the extra 25% off and double them up for the free shipping and… well, don’t buy the two if both don’t appeal to you.  But, you can see how the combos can match up.  Who’s afraid of a little plaid on their shirt?  Apparently lots of people.  For $26.25, with a slim fit and non iron finish, why the hell not if paired with a solid sweater, blazer, or tie?  The belt is actually leather on one side and cotton on the other.  Sneaky.  Metal rivets might look a little goofy on the leather side, but… it’s $15.

 

Contrast Stitch Pocket Polo – $22.46 ($29.95) + Slim Fit Pique Polo – $18.74 ($24.99)

Two slim fitting polos for again, $41 shipped.

This one is tricky because there are a few of the pique polos already marked down to the lower $24.99.  The pique grey is a very safe play here.  GAP “Contrast” stitch polo was also part of the palooza.  Fits just about the same as the rugby collar.  Pocket on this one.

 

Non-Iron slim-fit non iron – $35.99 ($47.99) + Baby Socks – $1.80 ($2.40)

Get your sister's kid some socks, or pay $7.00 for shipping.

Little known fact:  White socks from Baby Gap make fine temporary daubers for shining your shoes.  Okay, fine, that’s completely made up.  But it tips the balance for the free shipping.  Here’s the deal.  You either shell out $7.00 for shipping, or you pop for the socks.  You can leave $5 on the table if you’d like.  It’s either that or get this friggin’ pom-pom hat and use it as a coaster.  There is no shame in the free shipping game my grasshoppers.

THE GOOD:  GAP “Lightweight Heather” Rugby Collar Polo – $26.21 w/GAPGET ($34.95)

Different. In a good way.

So polos can be pretty boring.  Especially if you prefer solids.  GAP’s Lightweight Heather polo with the contrast rugby style collar is the right answer for mixing it up.  Three button placket that doesn’t dip too deep when buttoned with just one button.  Nice trim fit.  A little long in the tail, but not too bad.  Nice non-pique jersey style that’s soft and smooth.  Goes on sale all the time.  One of the best of the lot and a big win for GAP.  Three colors to pick from.  Code GAPGET takes 25% off your purchase and expires 4/11.

GAP Contrast Stitch Pocket Polo – $22.46 w/ GAPGET ($29.95)

Chest Pocket is a plus.

Contrast stitch?  Not on the one that was tried on in-store.  It’s more than possible that there’s a duplicate version of this thing in stores without the contrast stitching across the pocket, shoulders, sleeves, and hem.  Three colors online, none of them are this darker charcoal version.  Fit is the same trim style of the rugby collar above.

Arizona Jean Co. Vintage Wash Pique – $15.00

Hat tip to JC Penny on this one. Nice work.

One of the few pique polos that feels lightweight and smooth.  It has a “washed” effect that has really softened the fabric.  $15 through JC Penny, and despite what you might think, sizing down is NOT a good idea.  They fit true.  Like a GAP with a little more room, but if you’re a medium in most polos, you’ll be a medium here.  It’s not $40 good, but it’s $15 great.  Make sense?  Cotton, except for the heather grey version which is a 60% Cotton 40% Poly blend.

Express Fitted Signature Polo - $26.94 ($44.90)

Updated. And outstanding.

Polos aren’t like blazers or suit jackets.  Four buttons aren’t necessarily off limits.  This is one of if not the only polo Express makes without their logo on it.  The contrast placket is a new edition this year, as is that extra 4th button.  Two small details you won’t find on other polos.  Great price at the 40% off sale, but who knows when that’ll end.  95% cotton and 5% spandex with noticeable stretch.

Banana Republic Luxe Touch Polo – $31.15 w/ BRTUESDAY ($44.50)

Watch out for the collar. Size shown = Small.

The fabric is what’s so good about these things.  Cotton, and smooth to the point of being slick.  But they don’t shine like they’re some weird poly golf shirt or anything.  Consider sizing down, but a bunch of the reviews say they shrink badly in the wash.  Didn’t personally have that problem at all.  Size shown above is a small.  The one major drawback is the collar, which can pancake out into a flare.  That’s an absolute no when wearing a button up shirt, but for a polo, it’s not quite as bad.  Code BRTUESDAY is good for 30% off and expires today, 4/10/12.

THE BAD:  J. Crew Slub Cotton Polo – $19.99 ($39.50)

No, not bad. Just not good.

This really doesn’t belong in the “bad” section because it’s pretty well executed.  Slub polos are just awfully hard to dress up since you’ll always look a little ratty thanks to the texture.  Some could say the same for a linen suit… but you’re still in a suit.  Nice enough, but not all that versatile.  Decent price on sale.  The white slub gets a little translucent.  Ribbed cuffs on the sleeves.  Nice fit that’s certainly not too trim.

Target Merona Slim Fit Polo – $10.00 – $12.00

Disappointing, & the polo on the left makes you crave Frosted Flakes.

Ooof.  Some will disagree, but these weres a disappointment.  The Mossimo slim fit polos from last year haven’t shown up yet, and they might be getting replaced by these slim fits from Merona.  The issue is that these things are weirdly long.  Notice where my thumb is in the pic on the left.  That’s just above where my 501s hit.  Unless you’re over six feet tall, these things are going to be way long.  Fabric is good, price is excellent, but they’re just oddly long.

Old Navy “Slim” Pique Polo -$10 – $15

60/40 Cotton Poly.

A classic Old Navy “slim” fit mistake.  It’s trim in the arms and shoulders, but the body doesn’t seem to slim down at quite the same rate.  Old Navy is getting better with their slim cuts, but this one doesn’t work.  Thin fabric too.
NOTE:  The “Tri-Blend” polos just showed up online, and these did real well last year as long as you sized down.  Might be the closest thing we get to the Mossimo blend polos this year.  No word on fit, and $24.50 is spendy for O.N.

THE UGLY:  Target Merona “Ultimate” Polo – $10 – $15

Classic fit = you gain 15 pounds

But if given a choice between this and the fitted Merona, the fitted Merona wins in a walk.  That right there is a size medium, and it fits like a cardboard box.  About as comfortable as one too.  From user MK’s review on Target.com:  “GOOD SIZING AND LOOKS GOOD.  Im a big dude, 280, and the XXL fits properly.  I’d expect that they will be one season shirts, but at the low price i paid (they wont let me say, but lets say it was about 12 bones), i dont expect heirlooms.”  Right-o MK.

Original Penguin is a brand that can start awfully expensive at full retail.  Maybe blame their logo.  It’s hard not to like, even if you do have a zero-tolerance for the things.  The Penguin just doesn’t carry the pretentiousness other logos tend to project.  Stack the Friends and Family discount on their well stocked sale section, and prices get real palatable real quick.

Gary Wan 14-Wale Cord Jacket – $62.99 ($225)

Here’s a “would you wear it?”.  Already marked way down and in the sale section, it’s a 14-wale corduroy 2-button sportcoat with elbow patches and a corresponding collar.  The drop in the tail looks awfully modern & short, but the price might be right to take a risk on?  Remember, you’re on the hook for shipping costs if you return it.

Raglan Cotton Crew Sweater – $41.92 ($89.00)

Penguin cotton sweaters can fit great out of the box, the challenge is keeping them from shrinking in the wash (or, the dryer).  At least, that’s been the case in the past.  The extra 30% off drops them to $40, but that also means they’ll charge you $5 for shipping since it’s now under $50.  V-necks available on sale too, and if you’re just not the type to wear a bright white sweater, there’s other colors at full (ouch) price.

Stretch Dobby Indigo Jean – $41.99 ($98)

An 80% cotton blend? On Jeans?

These could very well be a bit of a freak out of the box.  81% cotton, 18% poly, 1% spandex.  Your guess is as good as mine.  “Heritage Slim Fit.”  They’ve also got a much more standard, 100% cotton, dark rinse jean on sale for even less, and the code there drops them under $30.

5 Pocket Grey Jean – $41.99 ($98)

The safest non blue blue-jean color.

Meanwhile, back in the land of 100% cotton jeans… a relatively inexpensive pair of light grey jeans that’ll work now and well into summer.  Should be good for wearing with darker polos or cotton blazers up top.  Heritage slim fit, which has a 16″ leg opening.  More on the fit here.

Gency Sweatshirt – $24.42 ($69.00)

They call it a sweatshirt, but don’t expect a super-thick fabric.  Take a look at how it curves at the bottom.  Seems more like a henley or long sleeve t-weight than a standard sweatshirt.  Great stripes, and the V-neck is different for a shirt like this.

Jodphur Suede Chelsea – $76.92 ($155)

Pull on, go out.

Now half off with the discount, and while it’s not going to be everyone’s pick, they’re a unique looking suede chelsea that could see some use for some.  OP shoes aren’t the heaviest, most well built things int he world.  But they can get the job done for a low price if you wait for sales.

Beze Plaid Jacket – $62.92 ($135)

Meet the duck billed platypus of outerwear.

It’s a Harrington!  It’s a Trench!  It’s…  What the hell is it exactly?  Seems to be a lighter weight spring jacket, with a stand out tonal plaid, that’s built on a Harrington chassis with trench style details like a gun flap.  All poly.

Mistletoe Madness Polo – $31.42 ($69)

Maybe a 2nd item to get over the $50 hump?

The name?  No clue.  Merry Christmas I suppose.  Comes in the heritage slim fit.  Penguin polos are nice because their collars aren’t tiny, they fit well in the slim fit, and they feel nice and light when worn.

Hammer Boot – $41.92 ($155)

Legit for $40. Almost... "2" legit.

A cheap, “genuine leather” slim moc-toe boot that should work for knocking around on weekends.  Was a way too steep $155, then went on sale a few times, and now it ends up at Target prices.  Sizes are getting scarce.

Oh.  Well, hell… who knows.  Probably nothing.  Easy vultures.  Don’t go circling quite yet.  There’s been noticeable influx of more affordable names into the sale section at Park & Bond, but again, it’s not to the level of the great Clad event of ’12.  Shipping is $5.95, and you’re on the hook for returns if it’s not final sale, and you want your cash back instead of store credit.  A warning… a lot of this is final sale, and it’s still Park & Bond which leans more expensive.

Original Penguin Lambswool V-Neck – $40.00 ($79)

Sure summer will be here soon.  But that doesn’t mean there won’t be cool mornings between now and then (and even then) and autumn to follow after.  Forty bucks is a decent price for lambswool.  Fit on Penguin V-necks of the cotton variety tend not to be too bulky, but not real fitted either.  Logo at the chest.  Four color options, lots of sizes.  Final sale.

Tie Bar Striped Tie Gift Set – $32.00

Three pieces for thirty two bucks.

Believe it or not, the description claims this set is made in the USA.  Tie is 2.5″ wide.  Tie bar is stainless and a trim 1.5″ wide.  Pocket square has that nice edge to it.  More pattern/color options available here.

Interesting.  Made in China like a lot (if not most?) Boss shoes, but the toe shape is perfect, and those perforations are going to be a great out-of-the-ordinary detail to some.  $160 for loafers though.  Lil’ steep.

Boss Black Maston Wingtip Chelsea – $198.00 ($395)

Final sale. Really? C'mon now.

All right, so not every Boss shoe is made in China.  These are actually made in Italy.  Wingtip + Chelsea side panels = too much going on for some.  Plus, they’re a final sale item.  No half sizes either.  Risky.  Real risky.

This doesn’t happen often.  Can’t remember the last time this model (“The Earl”) was on sale for this cheap in a standard color like black.  Lots of sizes.  For now.  Final sale.

Plenty of guys can’t understand why the hell anyone would drop twenty five bucks on ONE pair of socks.  But for those that do like splurging on the things that go between us and our shoes, these are 90% merino, 10% nylon, machine washable, and made in England.

Boss Black Hentor Gloves – $33.00 ($65)

Lambskin, simple on the tops, and that real nice detail of the checked lining that barely shows at the wrist.  Skip the light jacket on cold to cool spring evenings and opt for these and a sportcoat instead.  Sizing comes by way of hand circumference.  This site should help you figure that out.  Final sale.

Pretty late to be talking scarves isn’t it?  Yeah.  But that’s why it’s also under $40.  78″x14″.  Mostly viscose and nylon.  23% Merino Wool.  5% Cashmere.

Jack Spade Buffalo Check Computer Case – $198.00 ($395)

Not your average attache.

Jack spade design to a T.  Wool exterior, orange interior, and chocolate leather handles.  Comes with a shoulder strap for those longer trips through the airport.  $400 is asking a lot.  Just under $200?  Maybe…  Final sale though.

Lots of Penguin stuff in the sale section all of a sudden.  Anywho, the Moire effect has been alluded to on this website more than a few times.  It’s the on screen visual goofiness when a camera/monitor has a hard time interpreting very small, uniform patterns.  The photo of this shirt on the item’s landing page is a prime example.  It might give any TV newscast directors in the audience nightmares.  Final sale.

Made in Italy.

Not the most affordable thing in the world, but the non squared off tip, the wool construction, and the grosgrain at the neck help set it apart.  2.5″ wide.  Final sale.

Timberland Hand-Sewn Heritage Lace-up Boots – $83.00 ($165)

Somewhere, there are logs that need to become kindling.

Stompers aren’t they.  Made in the Dominican Republic, leather and canvas combo, and a real aggressive dirt-ready sole.  Fully lined with a yellow plaid.  Leather laces.  Sizes are all over the place.  Final sale.

The Monster Splurge:  Boss Black James Sharp Plaid Suit – $697.00 ($995)

For the fellas who can’t bring themselves to buy a suit under $400.  Or maybe for an upcoming law school grad.  Pretty damn good looking.  The James Sharp suits from Boss Black are usually labeled as a “trim fit.”

The Lightly Loud Sportcoat:  J. Crew Linen Navy Glenplaid – $168.00

Keep it cool fabric. Personality to burn.

Light in fabric, light in color, or both.  And try to throw a pattern in there somewhere.  The INC ultra lights from last year accomplished this on the cheap.  The GAP/BR light grey options are both in stock and go on sale plenty.  But it’s the J. Crew Italian Linen Navy Glenplaid that has the early lead for blazer/sportcoat of the season.

A water resistant, mid-thigh trench: Tasso Elba – $99.99   – $139.50

You want something that’s either a cotton/poly blend, or has a bit of a coating on the cotton that’ll shed water.  Double breasted looks great here.  Mid thigh or just above the knee is perfect.  Here’s a few options:

That dinky little turqoise number might get the job done, but she won’t be too impressed if you open that up on your rainy night date.  You want something between compact and enormous golf monster.  The Macy’s Tote’s Gentleman’s/Stick umbrealla is the champ, but the Abboud comes in patterns like chalkstripe and houndstooth, even though it feels a bit cheaper in your hands.

Grey Suede Desert Boots: Johnston & Murphy – $97.99 | Clarks – $110

Wear with pretty much anything but shorts.

Grey goes with almost everything.  Even pair these up with a cotton suit for a dressed down post-work look.  Jeans, of course.  Stretch your cords until the last breath of winter is gone.  Should do just fine with all manners of lighter colored chinos.  Sizes are getting short over at Endless.  More sizes for $99.99 through J&M for now.

The Stretch Cord Belt: Martin Dingman “Beck” Belt – $49.95

They’re a cleaned up version of thicker, nautical cord belts that you’ll also be seeing everywhere.  The colors are a little more toned down and the cords are a little smaller in diameter.  Woven but w/out the woven leather Dad belt look.

The Striped Light White Sweater:  L.E.C. – $60.00 | Target Merona – $28.04 ($33)

Nautical but warmer weather appropriate.

Depending on your location, there might still be another couple months of layering/sweater weather left.  Once the sun comes back out and the trees start to green up, you’ll want to slowly start to stash those black and charcoal sweaters in favor of something lighter.  Don’t go all white all the time, but a white or off white striped sweater can breathe a lot of life into a sweater drawer that’s been in mourning since September.  The L.E.C. sweater ships free with the code CLASSIC and pin 1020 (free shipping over $50) but you’re probably better off waiting for a sale.

Solid, well fitting polos should be the casual torso foundation for most guys during the warmer months.  But finding a polo that’s a little different is a nice way to break the rut.  Maybe the placket is a different color like the new Express Signature polos.  Or like Pengin’s “Earl Polo,” it has some decidedly retro stripes.  Maybe it’s a chest pocket with a button flap.  Just keep it cotton, trim, and not too over the top.  Wait for sales on both of these.

The Pocket T-Shirt:  American Apparel – $18.00

Graphic tees are too… y’know.  And plain crew or v-necks can sometimes look a little blank and/or underwear like.  Enter the pocket tee.  Don’t go sticking pocket squares in there, but feel free to use it as actual storage.  Notecard & Pencil for the grocery list, sunglasses when you head inside somewhere, that kind of thing.  Now only if Target’s Mossimo would make one.  J. Crew Factory has a decent cheap option too.

The Tie:  This one from Nordstrom’s 1901 – $39.50

AMERICA... F*#k YEAH!

A man in a red, white, and blue knit tie might not make the most intimidating presence, but it’ll look awfully slick with that khaki colored cotton or linen suit you’ve got on the first real warm day of the year.  More subtle color combinations can be found here and here.  Cheaper red/white/blue options are over here & here via thetiebar.com.

The Beer: An unfiltered Pale Ale or a Cloudy Looking Weiss

Opaque Awesomeness.

We’re drifting out of stout and porter territory, but we’re not quite to Pacifico weather yet.  An unfiltered pale ale like Manny’s from Georgetown Brewing, or a weiss with some stink like Hacker-Pschorr combines sweeter, more citrus leaning flavors with a fuller not-quite-chew-worthy-but-gettin’-there body.  Photo Credit

The Sunglasses:  Squared Off Aviators – Ray Ban Caravan – $104* – $125

Not a lot of mid-price range options here.

While the balanced proportions of the Ray-Ban New Wayfarer will never go out of style, an Aviator with squared off, non droopy lenses mean all business.  Keep the shine on the frames to a minimum if possible.  If you’re the type to scan sites like Gilt, Rue La La, and Beyond the Rack, you can snag a pair of Ray Ban caravans for under $90.  A few options here:

• Ray Ban Caravan – $130 – The expensive standard.  Gold is widely available and silver seems to only be available in a few places.  Maybe try Eddie Bauer during a site-wide sale?

The over-sized, bulky hooded sweatshirt is the default relaxation uniform most men habitually turn to.  The problem is, as “comfortable” as they  may be, they’re about one step above a snuggie when it comes to making you look good.

The hood itself is rarely if ever used.  The cascading jersey cotton around the middle gives you a shape that’s half Jabba the Hut, half Mayan Pyramid.  It’s just not real sexy.  There are other, better looking ways to dress way down and stay warm and comfortable.  Here’s five pieces of affordable proof:

1. Shawl Collar Cardigans: Old Navy Pocket Front Shawl Collar – $39.94

Nice front pockets.

This looks like something Woolrich would make, but in design and not fabric.  It’s a cotton poly blend, so it’s very much a smooth sweatshirt like material.  Great buttons, the shawl doesn’t dip too low, and those front pockets help and not hurt.  Quilt stitch patches of the same color and fabric are at the elbows.  They run a tad big but if you size down you might run out of room in the forearms.

2. Button Mock Neck Sweaters: L.E.C. Cable Sweater – $63.20* SHIPPED ($79.50)

Available in charcoal too.

Lose the ol’ 100% cotton 1/4 zip mock neck in favor of one of these more mountain ready looking things.  They seem to be magnets for women when you and her are on the same couch.  Over $60 even with a code, but sweaters have gotten real expensive everywhere.  Wool blend and hefty looking construction.  *Use the code DISCOVER and the pin 6956 to knock 25% off everything through Lands’ End & Lands’ End Canvas plus get free shipping.

3. Long Sleeve Polos: J. Crew Factory – $34.50, Charles Tyrwhitt Pima Polo – $69.00

Look for options with an extra detail or two.

Not quite a Rugby (which is a great option as long as it fits close) and not completely plain.  Options like these have a few extra details (stripes, cuff / collar lining) that make them more than just a plain pique polo with extended arms.

4. A Thrift Store Blazer – $5.00 – $15.00

Look for tweed. Kinda ugly is just fine.

One of the great things about a hooded sweat shirt is that you can spill a beer or hot sauce on it and it really isn’t a big deal.  Thrift store blazers are so cheap and so old that you can beat them to death and they’ll be all the better for it.  Splurge and get it tailored if it’s sailing out at the sides.

5. The crew neck sweatshirt / cheap button up combo:  Mossimo Fleece – $17.99

The hood has been molted.

Here’s the key.  Find some rumpled button down collar shirt at the thrift store (while scouting for blazers maybe?).  Old Navy shirts end up there all the time.  Doesn’t matter if it has a logo on it either.  That goes on underneath the crewneck.  You wouldn’t think it’d be possible to dress up a sweatshirt, but it is.  Feel free to leave it untucked as long as it’s not dress shirt long.  Size down in the sweatshirt if you can.

How do most U.S. Citizens passively celebrate a holiday that’s not named what we think it’s named and doesn’t even fall on the day of the thing it’s actually named after?  They hit retail sales.  The markdowns are a bit scattered this year.  Here’s a few that might be worth a look this weekend with a pick or two for each.

Indochino End of Season Sale – Save on select suits/blazers/etc…

Consider: The gray shadow plaid suit for $299 (was $399) and the Steve Nash Nailhead 3-piece for $429 (was $579.) Indochino hasn’t been doing that many sales or promotions in the last year, and this one isn’t half bad if you’re in the market for a suit that’s a little off the wall. Suits come with that $75 re-tailoring credit. Not really a President’s Day weekend sale, but instead just an end of season clearance.

Banana Republic – Extra 25% off already reduced styles w/ BRPRES25

Lots of sizes left too.

Consider: The Black Wool Top Coat for $97.49 (was $250) Sure pitchers and catchers are reporting to spring training, but a coat this good looking doesn’t come along for under $100 all that often. If you limped through this winter with an old beat up coat, now might be the time to upgrade. Not the thickest thing out there. More over here.

Consider: Trying in store.  Online is kinda mneh.  “Up to” and “select styles” are being used to describe the same sale?  Could be a bit of a smoke screen.

Consider:  The new Express Signature polo.  Specifically, two of them, which when combining the buy one get one 1/2 deal and code, it comes out to $52.35 or $26 per polo before shipping.  This year’s version has a contrast placket.  Some will like it, some won’t, but the springy (but not clingy) fabric and fit makes these one of the best values in polos every year.  Credit to reader Shaun for sending in a style tip about these being back.  He said they felt a little longer in the body than in the past, which will be good for those who think they’ve been a little chopped in previous years.

Consider:  The John Varvatos Varvatos Dress Medallion Chukka for $178.54 (was $298) or Cole Haan’s Air Colton in Taupe for $115 (was $198.)  Both of these were much, much cheaper when they were available during CLAD’s first couple rounds of markdowns.  But they’re long gone.

Tommy Hilfiger – Extra 30% off sale with THPRES30

Consider:  The Cap Toe Boot, now $55.99, or if you’re looking for a darker cotton/poly mix trench, their navy blue option is down to $140.  Looks like there might be a small logo on the left sleeve, and no word on the fit.  Overall the brand is looking better these days, but their website still seems to clunk around.
