UPDATE:  Damn it Gilt.  It was 95% huge sizes or already sold out.  They’re grounded.

Okay Gilt.  You’ve been on a bit of a run lately.  The Cole Haan sale was nice.  Same with the Tommy Hilfiger sale.  The French Connection selection from yesterday was decent.  Things are looking up.

Now don’t blow it.

Although the last suit sale was a bust, this one today holds some glimmer of hope.  The brands are different than the usual DKNY/Kenneth Cole characters, and if memory serves… the Hickey Suits didn’t exactly sell out.  There might even be a couple 40Rs in the bunch.

For a comparison, Hickey Suits via Bluefly are currently running just over $700.  That’s pretty expensive.  We’ll see what Gilt offers them at.  Billy Reid is everywhere.  His suits run about a grand retail.  Perhaps they’ll be some more affordable brands too.  As always, watch for final sale items, and know that if you can return it, it’s for credit only.

If this sale is a complete joke we’re grounding Gilt on Dappered till 2011.  GILTMAN YOU ARE ON NOTICE.

One of the great mysteries of the men’s style world is: Why the hell are simple ties more expensive than their busier brethren?

How hard is it for a mass retailer to make a tie that has a solid background, with ONE offsetting color of neatly placed stripes on it?

The navy blue tie with white stripes you see above is a prime example of a perfect necktie.  Simple, but not boring.  Classic, but not stuffy.  It’s also on sale for $69.00.  Regular Price?  An abhorrent $115.00.  Even on sale, almost seventy-bucks for a necktie is ridiculous.  But look at your other cheaper options, which can all be found at Macy’s:

………Alfani – $23.70…………. Donald Trump – $34.99 ………Kenneth Cole – $32.99………

The Donald Trump tie is getting there, but why are the thickness of the stripes different?  And somehow the usually dependable slick and clean Kenneth Cole label manages to screw the neck ware pooch.  Apologies for being an uppity snot, but when it comes to the tie from Alfani, I’d rather not have something around my neck that looks like I just puked fruity-pebbles all over it.

Simple is better.  But it’s also expensive.  Finding a simple tie for under $40 can be a challenge.  But if you do stumble across one you might want to consider snapping it up.  Because if you don’t, who knows when you’ll get that opportunity again.

Who didn’t love playing with those plastic green Army Men when they were kids?  Probably one of the best and cheapest toys of all time.  Now you can get em’ on a tie.

The different types of the classic green army men (Bazooka, Kneeling, Standing, etc…) are discreetly embroidered on a silk 3″ wide tie.  The ties come in Black, Orange, and of course… Green.  The Army Men are Green on all the ties, which is perfect for the black one.  If you’ve got a medium-gray suit (a staple) the black tie will look sharp with a white shirt.  Wear an all black tie with that get-up and you’d risk looking like you stepped out of a 1950′s pre-color TV.

Just enough color, with just enough character, at under $30.
