Why?  So these are a splurge.  Probably not a good idea if you just started dating.  They’re simple, 18k gold, and set with colorful semi precious stones.  Made in Italy too.

LOIS HILL “Two-Tone Open Scroll” Round Open Disk Fishhook Earring – $168

Not one but two colors.

Why?  Two-Tone metal is in right now, and the scrolling is really feminine.  They’re not cheap, but at about an inch wide they’re not tiny either.  They’re also neutral enough that she can wear them casually or dressed up.

Golden Pearl Tincup Earrings - $399 & Laguna Pearl 8-9mm Lavender Pearl Necklace – $189

Easter, anyone?

Why?  The golden pearl paired with the gold makes them really light and creates an almost iridescent look.  They’re a perfect spring time pick.  For the necklace, it’s actually a lavender color which is a fresher, more feminine choice than white.  White tends to look bridal.  This is still classic but can go with plenty of workday or weekend outfits.  And, all girls (okay most girls) like a strand of pretty pearls.  You can also select the length of the strand with the longer lengths adding to the cost.  But the 17″ that runs $189 is usually the standard.

Alexis Bittar ‘Smoky Dust’ Skinny Tapered Bangle – $100

Why?  Not all women can wear bangles because their wrists are too small, and some just don’t like bracelets in general.  So make sure she does before you make a purchase like this.  The three colors available are muted enough that they’ll go well with other bracelets and other pieces of jewelery.  The Swarovski crystals add enough sparkle that it can be a fun piece on its own.

Why?  BEWARE!  Giving her a ring box on Valentine’s Day, when not engaged or already married can be a huge misdirection.  No need to cause false expectations and hurt feelings.  The design on this ring is art deco influenced and has done enormously well in the online reviews.  *Part of the Macy’s One Day Sale that ends today (2/8/12.)  Sizes are going fast online, but there might be a supply at your local store.

Anyting Else?  If your lady is the type who’d appreciate something from an independent jewelery designer, try Etsy.com.  Called the “world’s handmade marketplace”, Etsy is a great place to find unique items at great prices.

Victorinox Dive Master 500 in Black or Orange – $199 ($550)

Not 100, not 200... 500 m.

When it comes to watches, Macy’s doesn’t always have the best deals.  So it’s a rarity when they’re soundly walloping the competition.  A 500 m water resistance rating and an anti-reflective sapphire crystal means this thing is the real deal, and not some watch that’s more form than function.  That, and they look incredible.  Was just going for full price on their site yesterday.  They are quartz, but under $200 is a beyond good price.

Club Room Cashmere V-Neck – $59.99* ($160)

Is cheap cashmere really cashmere?

There are two types of people in this world.  Those that own a sword, and those that don’t.  Now aside from that, there are three types of guys in the world of men’s style.  Those that put Cashmere at a premium and will take nothing but the best, those that put up with the many drawbacks of cheap cashmere (piling, weird hand feel, etc.), and those that will stick to Merino wool (I’d be the last one.)  This would be the cheap stuff.  Sixty bucks, but after 79 reviews it still has 5/5 stars.

Hilfiger Navy and Green Tartan Dress Shirt – $32.50* ($65)

Can’t drop $350 – $500 on that J. Crew Black Watch?  Get in line.  I’m holding a space for you.  Consider this a substitute.  Throw it on under a lighter grey sweater, tweed blazer, or flannel suit (which you can get for a couple hundred less than the sportcoat) and you’ll give a somewhat same effect.  Finish it off with a black silk knit tie to give it the third color and some texture.  Claims to be fitted.

Nautica Striped Scarf – $23.99* ($49.50)

Small cost, can't miss pattern.

Like wrapping your favorite pair of just loud enough socks around your neck.  Without the feet smell.  A little out of the norm without getting nuts.  Acrylic/Nylon/Wool blend.

Isotoner Quilted Gloves – $37.50 ($75) | American Rag Cable Knit Gloves – $9.99 ($14.50)

Cheap and cheapest

First spotted by Quetzal over here, the Isotoner quilted gloves are a great, more affordable alternative to the well liked version from Polo Ralph Lauren.  And it’s always good to have a backup pair when you can’t find your leather gloves, or, just don’t feel like wearing them.  The acrylic machine washable knits should do just fine.

Tommy Hilfiger Snowflake Scarf – $26.00 ($52)

Festivus ready.

Guerrilla Fair Isle.  It’s here, and then it’s gone.  And then… it’s back again.  Not a full sweater, but just a scarf.  Just a small dose of loud holiday patterns that are actually pretty subtle here.  Easy to take off unlike a sweater.

Hilfiger Tank Style Watch and Round Dial Watch – $39.99 ($59)

So these would not be water reistant to 500m

No word on how big the round dial is (sometimes Hilfiger watches can get a little too big) but if you want to experiment with the tank style, $40 is a nice entry level price point for a simple looking watch.

14K White Gold Diamond Cluster Earrings – $159.20 ($400)

Small, but she can wear them anywhere.

Don’t start.  I swear to the retail Gods that if anyone gets going on how big a waste of money diamonds are, I will turn this Monkey Fighting website around on this Monday-to-Friday internet and we will ALL GO HOME AND WRITE ACTUAL LETTERS AND SEND FAXES TO EACH OTHER.  Seriously.  Anyway, $400 for these is way too much.  $160 is pushing it but costs are up everywhere.  These are tiny.  Real small.  But that makes them great for her to wear with a pair of jeans and a well fitting sweater.  Just enough sparkle if you can find a good set, so go in store and ask to see a few different pairs next to each other.

One of those few ties that works with jeans.

Well look what’s back and on sale.  $20 is a fair price for one of the more casual, versatile, knit ties you’ll find.  Ties a pretty decent knot too.  Pretty trim in the width so steer clear if you don’t like that look.

The Hoodie Upgrade

Probably the lowest you’ll see these go for.  The custom is an honest-to-goodness trim fit (and could be too trim for some) that eliminates all that extra bulk you usually get with Rugbys.  Not a ton of color options, good size selection.

Calvin Klein Textured French Cuff Dress Shirt – $38.99 (reg. $65.00)

007 on the cheap?

The texture is thin and runs north to south, making this one of the best dress shirt options for wearing with a tux.  If you don’t like that entire winged collar pleated front tux shirt look, this is a great affordable alternative.  Plus, it’s just flat out a nice dress shirt.  Absolutely wearable with suits.

Worth the extra $100. And you get to keep it.

Speaking of black tie, wedding season is almost here.  And despite the temperatures, a lot of couples like to throw black tie late afternoon into the evening weddings.  Don’t get caught having to rent a tux at the last minute.  The Hilfiger Trim Fit isn’t too skinny, isn’t traditional fit either, and can be tailored to fit your body shape.

A reminder guys, Mother’s Day is Sunday.  These aren’t real appropriate for your actual Mom, but if you have kids?   You best not forget about she who carried your offspring.   Diamond Studs that are a little more intricate than just one stone are about as safe a play as it gets.   Plus, she can wear em’ just about anywhere.  Department Store diamonds can vary greatly in quality, so if you’re looking to buy, head in store and ask to see multiple options side by side.  Pick the pair that the light bounces off of the best.

Happy Belated Birthday and welcome to your thirties!  Here’s how I’m picturing you–a tiny silver or gold hoop in each ear that you’ve rarely taken out since you got them pierced, yes?  I see a lot of guys with this look–usually a bit older than you, maybe 35 or 40–and I always think the earrings have ceased to be intentional.  What I mean by that is everything else you wear is chosen and changed on a daily basis.

Let’s assume you care about style (otherwise what the heck are you doing here?), in which case you stand in front of your closet in the morning and think about how you feel and what your schedule is like.  Then you choose a pair of stylish yet comfortable loafers because you’ll be at the office but you’ll be running between floors for different meetings.  You pick a pair of perfectly pressed pants, but the ones with a little extra room in the gut because you’ve been feeling self-conscious about gaining some extra holiday pounds and you don’t want to be straining against the waistband all day.

The sweater you decide on is red and has toggle clasps, simply because today feels like a red, toggly day.  You pick socks that match and the right coat, and a watch that picks up the undertones in the sweater.

About as low priced as a Hilfiger Trim Fit gets.

It might be time to do away with the term “sharkskin,” and instead stick with worsted wool.  Sharkskin suits invoke images of shiny almost reflective suits.  This one thankfully doesn’t do that.  Light gray and better looking in person than it looks on Macys.com, which in the pics the model appears to be wearing a jacket one size too big.  These are suit separates, so… don’t forget the pants.

Buying a woman jewelry can be a nightmare, but these are about as safe of a bet as it gets. Happy Tax Day.  Try and wrap your brain around this one:  The average US Taxpayer will get a $3000 refund this year.  That’s up 10% compared to last year.  Three grand.  Which is a hell of a 0% interest loan Uncle Sam gets from the average Tax Paying American.

Is it better to pay a little at the end of the year, and therefor have that extra $3000 making interest for you instead of the US Treasury?  Of course it is.  But most love seeing a check come back from the Feds in the early spring.  It allows a lot of us to splurge since it feels like a windfall.

$3000 might be an over-estimate for a lot of us reading an Affordable Men’s Style Website.  So for argument’s sake, let’s drop it down to $1,000… and here’s a step by step splurge filled guide on how to spend that check.  (In case you don’t want to stash it in the bank or invest it)
