Your jeans want boots.  Brown leather ones to be precise.  They were of course, the natural pairing with denim before Jerry Seinfeld laced up bright white Nikes with his Levi’s and called it good.  That’s an all but dead look, and it’s back to the boot roots we go.  Just keep your casual brown boots the picture of moderation.  Nothing too wide, nor too pointy.  Like any of these three on sale options…

The Earthkeepers: Unlike the much appreciated City 6″ side zip, there’s no zipper on the side of these, but the shape seems to be just about the same.  Toe burnishing looks a little heavy.  But for $80, it’s tough to complain too much.  Interesting that the newest models via Timberland.com have canvas side panels.  Not these though.

The Fossil Henley:  Full grain pebbly leather and the contrast lacing/stitching makes these stick out more than most.  Cap toe and aggressive outsole.  Leans heavily towards casual.

The Gordon Rush Charleston: The dressiest of the bunch, but still has some quick lacing towards the top of the boot.  Also available in black.  Crazy expensive.  Especially for being made in China, but that’s pretty par for the Gordon Rush Course.

First G.H. Bass & Co. helped out with black boots for $70 on Friday, and now it’s Kenneth Cole’s step-down REACTION line that chips in with a brown pair.

The Top Class boot is a standard that goes on sale every few months.  The black boots are pretty much sold out, but the brown version still has some decent size selection yet.

Although affordable, Kenneth Cole’s dedication to quality (or lack there of) for his products has been called into question by many.  And since this is his REACTION line, don’t expect these to last the rest of your life.  Some reviews online are glowing, some are not.  Just be aware of that before you dive in.  But if your looking for a pair of go-with-just-about-anything brown boots, these have the shape and look to fill that need.

It’s rare that such sh*t kickers come at such a reasonable price.  And these boots avoid many of the usual drawbacks some motorcycle-inspired boots can come with.

The toe isn’t too thick, too pointy, or too square.  The side buckles are well placed, well proportioned, and dull silver.   Combine all that with the unique back ankle-calf zip with a snap at the top, and these are no longer just shoes, they’re a unique feat of footwear-engineering.

Whatever you do, please doen’t tuck your pants into em’.  Sure the uppers look terrific, but that doesn’t mean you need to strut around showing them off to the world.  They’re still just boots.  Hopefully durable and comfortable boots that you can wear when you want or need to wear a pair of boots.  Keep what’s up top just for you, and for whoever’a bed your boots get under.
