Remember the 10 Style “resolution” suggestions for 2012?  #2 seemed to be what a lot of guys wanted to try to do.  That was the resolution about going a full month without buying any clothes, shoes, or accessories.  A cleanse for your closet of sorts.  Or, a binge for your checking account.

Once January was done, we asked over Facebook and Twitter those who had attempted the challenge if they’d be up for answering a few short questions.  Both those who were successful, and those who failed in this resolution heeded the call.  Yesterday was all about those who made it to the finish line.  Today, those who stumbled along the way were gracious enough to gives us the how and why they didn’t get there:

How far did you get?

Nick (Arborist):  January 24th.

Shuang (College Student with a side job):  January 20th.

Carlos (Project Manager at a non-profit):  I think I made my first style purchase around mid-January.

What was your final undoing?

Nick:  I put the LEC Inlet (what they call an outlet) on my to-do list that day, right after Taco Bell.  I knew both stops meant the undoing of resolutions.

Shuang:  A pair of wurkin stiffs for $7.50 from ebay

Carlos:  J. Crew’s Cotton Shawl Cardigan in Grey and the Toggle Shawl collar sweater.  I’ve always been shawl-curious and couldn’t take it anymore.

Were you disappointed that you didn’t make it?

Nick:   What I bought was worth it – I’m wearing one of the shirts now, and I’m pleased with the look and the price.  I’m generally disappointed in my own self-control which extends to this situation, but on the whole, it’s still moving my closet in the right direction.

Shuang:  50% disappointed, 50% glad that I caught the huge sales…like a J. Crew peacoat for $85

Carlos:  No way.  Love the sweaters.

Did you ever find yourself in a store browsing despite making the resolution?

Nick:  Yes.  Excuses that appeared were: I’m buying this as a gift for someone else.  This is a thrift store, it doesn’t count.  Honey, I was looking for our shopping cart and found it by the menswear.

Shuang:  YES.

Carlos:  I did do some browsing, but it was mostly online, until I had to go to the mall to buy a birthday present for my boss.  That’s when I stopped into J. Crew.

What was the most tempting thing you didn’t buy during your one month off?

Nick:  The hardest thing was the LEC herringbone blazer that Primer Mag featured.   But I know S/M/L sizing doesn’t work well with my tall and thin frame, so I used that to talk myself out of it.   Plus I recently bought 2 Indochino suits – one came in December and the other should be here soon, so I had that to hold onto.

Shuang:  Clarks Bushacres from DSW

Carlos:  Black oxfords.  I have some Calvin Klein black boots, but have been wanting some black oxfords for months.

Do you think this is something you’ll try again in the future?

What Nick resisted.

Nick:  No.  I’m already scaling back spending since my wardrobe refresh (I say that, but I’m not really).

Shuang:  Yes.  Possibly for my birthday month (June).

Carlos:  I need to.  My wife and I have been trying hard to stick to our budget and be disciplined, especially because my daughter goes to private school and tuition is going up next year!

Why was taking a break from shopping relevant to you?

Nick:  It was a ruse to get my wife off my back. I don’t recommend it.

Shuang:  I think I had a shopping addiction, so I had to stop myself somehow.

Carlos:  Because I spend too much on style items. It’s just too tempting.

Not to get too heavy here, but do you think you spend too much on clothes and the like?  Are you rebuilding a wardrobe?  Is it just your “thing” you choose to spend money on?

Nick:  As a percentage of household spending, my clothing spending is about 2.5% more recently, up from about 1.1%.  It seems completely reasonable to me to continue at this pace, and I’m pleased with the outcomes and the reactions from folks.   Sales, thrifting, and lower priced retailers make up the bulk of the purchases with a rare full-priced item that’s usually a gift – all this helps to keep the costs responsible.

Shuang:  Yeah, I definitely think I spend way too much on clothes, since most of my part-time work wage was spent on clothes.  I just started rebuilding my wardrobe last September.  I guess it is my “thing” right now since I use to spend a lot of my money on photography, and before that cologne.  Hopefully I stick to clothes.

Carlos:  I would say absolutely when you look at how much I spent last year.  The thing is, over the last 3 years I’ve lost about 85 pounds.  Finally, early last year I decided I was sick of looking like a slob at work.  Shirts were too big, pants didn’t fit right, and all my suits were size 40 (I’m now a 36R).  So last year was my “rebuilding” year when it comes to my wardrobe.  I spent a lot of money on work clothes and suits, with a few casual items thrown in (i.e. a few pairs of jeans that properly fit).  I’m hoping, and have been warned by my wife, that this year will be different.

The first of a hopefully long series.  When will the series get old?  Beats me.  If I attempt Dress Barn, then yes, that’d be the time to stop.

Ahren (IT/Librarian):  Still haven’t bought anything new yet!  I will probably take care of the leftover stuff on my x-mas wishlist soon (belt, jeans and 2 pairs of shoes).

Danny (Fundraising Researcher):  Still going.

Jeffrey (Health Policy Analyst/Adviser):  J Crew’s slim cotton-cashmere v-neck sweater in caspian.

Aaron (Strategy Consultant):  I’m still on the No Spend Wagon.

Conor (Photographer/College Student):  My first purchase has yet to happen, although I did just take a shirt to the tailor.  Not sure if that counts.

Victor (Consumer Electronics):  A pair of on sale Levi’s.  Happened on Feb. 2nd.

Did you ever find yourself in a store browsing despite making the resolution?

Ahren:  Yes, a couple times.

Danny:  Yes.  Initially I didn’t set out to go the whole month without buying anything.  Also, I had a Nordstrom gift card I was looking to use and still haven’t.

Jeffrey:  I tried to avoid going to stores/malls, but I did from time to time stop in just to take a look at any new lines.

Aaron:  No.  The key for me was to not go into a store no matter what.

Conor:  Not in a store, no, but I definitely browsed the online stores A LOT.

Victor:  Yes.  I was in Vegas in January, and couldn’t help looking in hat shops, watch shops, and nearly made a purchase – but didn’t.  Budget matters.

What was the most tempting thing you didn’t buy during your one month off?

Conor.... ohhhh Connnnerrrr...

Ahren:  Everything that was on mega-clearance!

Danny:  A pair of the Unis Gio pants when they went on sale for 50% off.

Jeffrey:  The plaid topcoat from Banana Republic.  It was on sale and they had one in my size.

Aaron:  A new suit from Banana Republic.  But, like I said, I stayed out of the store and wouldn’t allow myself to even go in and try it on.

Conor:  That Skagen watch with the brown leather band that’s been on Dappered recently.  That, or the Skagen inspired by “Drive” which has been tempting me so much.  It’s just a matter of time.

Victor:  I nearly bought a hat.  And cufflinks.

What did you do with the money you didn’t spend?

Ahren:  I paid off x-mas.  I’m finally solvent again!

Danny:  Spent it on a couple of nice dinners with my wife, and a couple of nice bottles of wine for the house.

Jeffrey:  I’ve been saving up for a while to get a condo or row house in DC (it is a buyers city not a renters city) so it all went into that fund.

Aaron:  I just bought a condo.  So painters, refinishing the hardwood floors, new linens, stuff for the kitchen, etc…

Conor:  Food food food!  That, and I actually SAVED it.  My checking account has never been so full.

Victor:  It went into other good things like resources around the house for my children and flowers for the wife.

Do you think this is something you’ll try again in the future?

Ahren:  Probably, but some of those clearance sales are pretty tempting.

Danny:  I believe so.  It’s good to show some restraint every now and then, and I like having tangible goals and ways of measuring.

Jeffrey:  I recently did a wardrobe purge so I feel like I have a really good collection of work/lounge/play so I might go a while until I get anything else.  Although the new dress shirts at JCrew look phenomenal.

Aaron:  Yes.  I’m planning on keeping it up.  I’ve got way too much clothing already and it’s not a bad way to give to charity.

Conor:  Certainly.  If anything, I almost forgot about the fact that I hadn’t really purchased anything for a month, so it might happen again by accident!

Victor:  Very likely.  Pacing one’s self is good.

Why was taking a break from shopping for clothes/shoes/etc relevant to you?

Ahren:  I bought a lot in November and received a lot of gifts in December, so taking a break in January was pretty easy and I really didn’t want to spend any more money.

Danny:  I like to think that I don’t need to buy myself things to stay happy.  It’s true, but sometimes I find myself shopping, either online or in person, just out of habit.

Jeffrey:  My closet was bursting and I finally realized that I had so many things that I just did not wear anymore that I wouldn’t get anything new until I finally got that situation under control.  I feel like I am at that place right now, but every now and then I come across something that belongs in the donation pile.

Aaron:  Impulse purchasing is something I need to control.  Also, the feeling of not taking advantage of a good sale hurts but you can get through it after you do it a few times.

Conor:  As a 19-year-old college student, it often seems like a tough lifestyle to validate.  I’m thankful for the Dappered site, as it helps me satisfy my “GQ” cravings with the wallet of a college student.

Not to get too heavy here, but do you think you spend too much on clothes and the like?  Are you rebuilding a wardrobe?  Is it just your “thing” you choose to spend money on?

Ahren:  In the past I’ve been more of a spree shopper.  I tended to shop once or twice a year and try to make things last as long as possible.  I try to shop more often now, or at the very least I try not to put off buying new clothes.  Nice clothes are expensive and in the past I always wanted to spend my money on other things.  But recently, I have gotten a lot more aggressive about weeding out stuff I don’t/shouldn’t wear anymore and replacing it with stuff I like that fits well.  I’m getting more comfortable spending my money on clothes and part of that is owed directly to Dappered.

Danny:  I spend a fair amount, but I don’t feel like it’s too much . I don’t carry a balance on a credit card, I still manage to put away a good chunk of money each month into my retirement account, and I have some money saved up.  I did rebuild my wardrobe in late 2011 and I think I am in a good spot with it for now.  Clothes, etc., are definitely where I spend most of what I spend on myself, but my wife and I enjoy eating out (we’re in S.F. and lucky to have lots of options), and that is our single biggest joint expenditure outside of rent and bills.

Jeffrey:  I started keeping a closer eye on my finances since I decided to buy a place and I think I spend more than I should.  I put a lot of priority on the fit off the rack since my tailor, who is great, is just really expensive.  That said, it is not like I only buy expensive brands, in fact I get most of my sweaters from Target since they actually fit really well.  I also love the Alfani Red suit separates from Macys.  But I do find that getting new clothes is a guilty pleasure of mine since I try to always dress my best.  Travelling is really the only expensive hobby/activity I do, so I think getting a nice outfit/accessory/pair of shoes every now and then is a treat for me.

Aaron:  While I subscribe to the “thing” theory of spending lots on a certain thing… I have a lot of “things.”  Gourmet cooking, long distance cycling, and now my house.  My goal for 2012 is to spend more time on maintaining my clothes.  Meaning,  more trips to the tailor and finding a shoe guy to keep what I have looking nice and lasting as long as possible.

Conor:  I spend way too much money and time on clothes and accessories and “style research” – but I love it!

Victor:  The next step really has to be, ‘what to do with the old stuff that hasn’t been worn in a while’ – with each new piece, I think about what occasion I’ll wear it in. That’s the question that I ask before purchase, and it’s one that stands a decent chance of stopping an unnecessary purchase.

A lot of guys can’t bring themselves to wear a trench coat.  They think they look weird wearing one.  Which is too bad, because trenches help broaden your shoulders and trim up your waist like a great peacoat or topcoat.  Trenches get compliments.  And they also provide much needed protection from, y’know… weather.

You want a trench that’s lightweight, has a bit of poly blended into the cotton so it doesn’t soak up the rain, and fits more like your best suit than a poofy parka.  You’ll also want one that’s long enough to get to mid thigh or close to your knees, but anything past that and you risk looking like you’re about to toss your trench aside to go streaking.

Don’t like the belt?  Take it off.  Or, tie it in an overhand knot behind your back which will give the coat more shape.

After a year hiatus, Banana Republic is back with a lightweight trench that’s pretty close to perfect.  Last spring’s model was decent, but it was all cotton and the fit was… tubular?  For the fall, their trench was all poly.

This season’s trench is much more like the one they had in 2010.  Their fabric is a cotton/nylon blend that moves real well and should shed water.  It has a nice tailored fit off the rack and has all the usual, but not over the top trench details (epaulets, tabs at the cuffs, etc…)  It also, and this is important, looks great with or without the belt.

The biggest knock against the Spring 2010 trench was its less traditional, darker color.  That was more than just fine for plenty of us.  The Spring 2012 seen here is much lighter.  A shade or two lighter than the honey colored London Fog your gramps used to wear.

The nylon appears to cause some slight wrinkling to show up in the fabric, but it’s no big deal.  The hardware is great, the quality feels awfully good, and it’s Banana Republic so it’ll be on sale all the time.

By now, if you don’t know, the Esquire / JCPenny co-production CLADmen.com seems to be liquidating their inventory.  When word got out that they were doing an extra 25% off their sale section, the site was decimated.  Items were already ridiculously inexpensive, but the extra 25% off made it wild.

Remember, they’re going out of business, so returns might be a pain if not impossible at some point.  I myself got a phone call from a Cladmen rep informing me that a purchase was now out of stock and wouldn’t be shipped.  So it’s a bit of a crapshoot, but shoot if you will.

Cut from from one piece of leather.  Not for everyone.  As sleek and as smooth as it gets.

Who knows how these are going to fit.  It doesn’t seem to say anything about a more tailored fit, or, if these are from the closer fitting CK BODY line.  But $140 for a wool suit?  Got a tailor?  Does have some striping.  Side vents and the lapels look nice and trim.

A little expensive, even with the 25% off, but it’s made in the USA and has a cotton back instead of the usual silk or poly shined up stuff.  Tailored fit.

A little funky, and it’s always hard to buy sunglasses over the web not knowing what they’ll look like on your face, but if you’re in need and want something different…

Sterling Silver?  For $16.43 shipped?  Nice texture too.  They also have one with a grid style texture for a little bit more cash.  These should go real fast.

If we were all able to gather up the collective courage housed within the entire readership’s b*lls, then one of us, using that gonadal conglomeration of chutzpah, might be able to pull this son of a gun off.

A warning: Like last time, this stuff should go quick.  And don’t expect glass smooth sailing on their website.  Word is out, so it’s possible that it’ll become a bit difficult to navigate if they get flooded with traffic.  Looks like their shoes and accessories section have seen the most additions.  Don’t be surprised if you think you have something, only to get a phone call from a customer service rep saying they sold out…

The common joke is to call it Tar-ZHAY.  Sounds more upscale.  But in all seriousness, if you’ve got limited places to shop, you’re on a limited budget, or both, Target can be a surprisingly decent place to find solid stuff.

Long, long ago, our pal Barron from The Effortless Gent did a guest piece on the three essentials every man must own that he can find at Target.  But it’s been awhile, and rumor had it Target has just started stocking a new cotton sport coat.  A field trip was scheduled, and these five pieces have since been field tested to see if they’re worth the cash it takes to acquire them:

The Blazer:  Merona “Kensington” Cotton Two Button Sport Coat – $44.99

Workin. At the cart wash. Yeah.

Old Navy used to be the source for decent, mega cheap, cotton sport coats.  That’s not the case for now.  This one from Target is just as good if not better than what Old Navy has been producing these last few years.

• Available in Navy or Khaki
• Completely unstructured, but not super thin like an INC ultra light
• Medium weight chino fabric isn’t too wimpy or too thick
• Off the rack fit is surprisingly good.  Some could get away without tailoring.  A medium fit my frame just fine
• Lower pockets are a patch with flaps hybrid
• Center Vent
• Sleeves run normal.  Buttons aren’t functional, but there’s a flap there that might cause tailoring issues.

Is it worth the cost?  Yes.  Absolutely.  Not available online, so check in store.

The Shirt: Merona Ultimate Dress shirt in “Railroad Grey” – $22.99

Collar is good and substantial too.

Can’t sing the praises of these enough.  Found this one on clearance for around $17, but at full price they’re still a bargain.  There’s some poly in some of these, but they aren’t wispy and scratchy like some department store dress shirts.  Fit is good and there’s even side pleats on the back.  Looks a bit like a cleaned up grey chambray.  If a sharp white dress shirt seems too formal or too business like?  Go grey.

Is it worth the cost?  Yes.  They also come in white, blue chambray, and some patterns too.

The Jeans: Denizen by Levi’s 218 Straight Fit – $29.99

Lap shots make me feel cheap.

A lower brand from Levi’s.  Fit is somewhere between a 501 and the slimmer 514.  The wash was a real nice, super dark blue, but the tonal whiskering at the ol’ pelvic area isn’t the most desirable thing.  Stitching on the back pockets is a welcome generic two parallel lines running horizontally.  They don’t feel like quality denim, but they’re not going to be at this price.  Looks are decent enough though.  Not available online in this wash.

Is it worth the cost?  No.  Just save up another $15 and catch a Levi’s sale.

The Shoes: Merona “Trey” Suede Chukka Boots – $39.99

Not half bad looking.

I’ve been lucky.  Every time I see someone leave a comment or write an online review about a cheap pair of shoes that goes something like this: “These blew apart on me in three days!  The sole came unglued when I was crossing the street while being chased by wolves and when a Chevy Astro clipped my exposed heel one of the wolves tore off my BIG TOE AND IT’S ALL THE SHOE COMPANY’S FAULT WHARRGARBL!!!!”  I honestly can’t relate.  Cheap shoes have been good to me.  But these, while decent enough looking and feeling in the uppers, they’re just a little too risky when it comes to the construction that I wouldn’t doubt that wolf/traffic scenario as a real possibility.  Maybe.

Is it worth the cost?  No.  Pass on these and get a pair of Clarks.  They’ll cost more, but they’ll last longer.

The Watch: Timex Weekender Nubuck Strap – $33.05

Can certainly be worn on more than just the weekend.

There’s a few more color combinations in this style now available at Target.  And while the slip thru strap weekender will probably sell far more, the case on these is more of  a matte.  Ticks kinda loud, and it’ll be too small for the bigger fellas, but overall it’s a great looking watch for just over $30.

Is it worth the cost?  Yes.  Without a doubt.

As always, it’s incredibly tough to peg when Macy’s will launch a One Day Sale.  Sometimes a month and a half will go by between them, sometimes only a few weeks will pass.  One thing is certain: These are usually sales worth paying attention to.  The one-day sale prices are some of the best mark downs in the retail industry.  Here’s some of the best from the One-Day-Sale which runs Tues. Alfani RED Fitted White and Blue French Cuff Dress Shirts – $19.99* ($49.50)

All right all you cuff link aficionados.  Good news and bad news here.  The good news is that they’re cheap and they’re fitted.  The bad news is that Alfani RED uses some poly in their shirts.  It won’t feel as good or as soft as an all cotton, but again, it’s $20.

Alfani RED Three Piece Navy or Grey Suit Separates – $249.97* ($570)

Lapels: Navy - Notch, Grey - Peak

Looks like they’re blowing these three piece suits out online.  You can describe each of these suits with three words:  Inexpensive, accessible, and serviceable.  The armholes could be higher.  The fabric could feel a little better.  And while not as strong as the Hilfiger Slim Fit shoulders, the pads could be a little thinner, but when it comes to slim fit three piece suits, these are as affordable as they get.  Take them to your tailor and they’ll look sharp.  Each has an overall score of 5 stars on the Macy’s website.  Not everyone’s cup of tea.  But worth a mention.

Alfani RED Brown Weave and Grey Sharkskin Suit Separates – $199.98* ($495)

Like the 3-piece options, these are separates. Good for odd proportions.

Now a brown suit for under $200?  If you want to give brown a shot, but don’t want to invest a ton of money in one, then maybe this is worth a look.  The lighter grey is a great color, and again, while the armholes could be higher and the fit a little closer (even though they are trimmer than standard suits) the price is dirt cheap.

Perry Ellis Wool/Silk Ties – $17.99* ($55)

Little wool, little silk, little price.

Many of us like a little wool in our silk ties, but sometimes a wool or wool mix tie can get so dark and subtle that it’s almost ignorable.  The contrasting stripes on these prevent that.  Great price too.

Cole Haan Air Kilgore Plain Toe – $119.99 ($158)

Nike owned.

For the guys that not just embrace, but love plain, and need something comfortable.  Black.  Nothin’ fancy.  Equipped with Nike AIR in the heel.  Rockport price and squishyness without the clunk.  Ships free.

 

Calvin Klein Garrison Suede Chelsea – $79.96 w/ AVNEWYEAR2 through S.T.P. ($150)

STP has Macy's beat on this one.

No, not Stone Temple Pilots.  Sierra Trading Post.  Macy’s has these as a web buster for $135.  But Sierra Trading Post has them for $100, and, with the extra 20% off code AVNEWYEAR2, it drops them down to an afforable level.  Suede is going to be big this year.  Code expires 2/8.

Boy.  Macy’s isn’t having a good day when it comes to on-sale suede footwear.  The Zappos owned 6pm.com has the J&M Runnells for under $80.  Now, they only have three colors while Macy’s has five, but Macy’s has em’ for $110.  The sheepskin lining on these, and many other J&M shoes, is awfully nice.

 

Dockers Alpha Khaki – $44.99 ($68)

Big thighs guys need not apply.

Slimmer than a D1.  A favorite for some.  Four colors available through Macy’s at a real decent mark down.  Not your Dad’s perma-creased pleated front work trousers.  These are chinos that can do duty at work but not feel awkward on the weekend.

 

Dockers D1 Soft Front Slim Fit – $34.99 ($55)

Not a boring khaki.

And for those of us with some meat on our bones, yet still like a closer fit, the D1 soft front is a little more relaxed in fabric (read: thicker, no crease, some wrinkling here and there) and the fit can be great for some.  Points for the mustardy yellow/brown color “ghurka” seen above.

 

Timberland City Escape Moc – $60.99 ($110)

Whoa!  $60?  Sure they’re ugly.  But ugly in a good way.  Right?  Sure some of you are shouting NO at your computer screen.  But… c’mon.  Some of us will dig em’.

Bold could be solid additions.

This one has potential.  Maybe not with that too intricate bracelet looking stainless strap, but if you swap that out for a brown or black leather?  Could make a real clean dress watch for cheap.  The multi function has popped up at this price before during previous one day sales.  Both are quartz.

 

Citizen AT0810-12E Chrono – $165.00 ($275)

Solid for $165

Like the big honkin’ sport chronos?  But one’s that are more function than fashion?  43 mm means it’s a bit beastly, with a chunky bezel, a chronograph, and the Eco-Drive power train.  Now $165 through Amazon and for now sold DIRECT by Amazon.  That’s a big deal.  On sale at Macy’s for $208.50.  Above image via Amazon customer Isabel.

You probably already have a navy, black, or grey wool overcoat.  The camel colored coat is something of a luxury.  Nobody needs two coats.  But if you’re an outerwear honk, then a camel colored coat is one of those things that might be on your list.

Winter is coming to a close, and a lot of us are about ready to move over to our lighter trench coat (more on that tomorrow).  But the most famous resident of Gobbler’s Knob begs to differ about the imminent change in season.  Even if we’re not in for six more weeks of winter, a camel colored coat is light enough in color to not look too out of place if the temps are just barely dipping below freezing.

So.  End of season, a slightly abnormal design, and a color that’s not what most men reach for.  That all makes for $200 off a coat that looks to be a perfect length, has well placed hand pockets, and comes from a designer that usually leans towards closer, less boxy fits.  Ships and returns free through Nordstrom.

Some of you guys always keep the collar on your overcoats at attention as it is.  But what about a funnel/stand up type like this?  Sorta risky, but this might be the right color and price for a risk.  Or, completely not.

I love ya PF Flyers.  Many thanks to you Jack Purcells for all the good times.  But man.  These look like they could be something else.  Waxed cotton uppers with leather laces.  Available in four colors according to the catalog, with three over here on their website, and the fourth, navy, here.  One of them fancy pants “in good company” collaborations.  UPDATE:  Looks like the Navy option is the only one that comes with waxed canvas.  Nice catch by Brent in the comments.

4. Animal Locomotion: Plate 44 (Man taking off hat) – $60

Passed along by our Arts & Culture correspondent Ben Madeska.  So you’re ready to take the Belushi poster off the wall, but you also can’t tell a Manet from a Monet (join the club.)  You want something that’s instantly attractive to everyone, but has a utilitarian feel too.  Enter Eadweard Muybridge.  Born in Britian and emigrated to the U.S. in the mid 19th century, Muybridge was one of the first to take this newfangled camera contraption out for a spin.  Y’know, to see what this thingamajig could do.  He shot people and animals in motion.  And it’s awfully hard not to love this hellaciously well dressed gent taking his hat off, frame by frame.  Also available:  A woman opening a parasol.  Hawt.

3.  Jack Spade Cotton Pinstripe Briefcase – $199 ($395)

Probably best not to wear a striped suit with it.

Available through Gilt, and while the sale ended yesterday, it doesn’t look like it sold out before time expired on the Jack Spade Sale.  So look for it to show up again somewhere on the site.  Slim, nice looking leather hardware, and that pinstripe exterior guarantees it’ll stand out quietly amongst the sea of black and brown leather briefcases.

 

2. Banana Republic Tailored Grey Birdseye Suit – $347.75 w/ BRTICKTOCK ($535)

Not everyone can afford a suit from SuitSupply.  Not everyone has had decent (or any) luck with Indochino.  Thankfully, Banana Republic has really stepped it up with their suiting.  While department store brands stick with solids and stripes, BR has added some variety to their closer fitting tailored fit lineup with a birdseye and subtle glen plaid.  From a distance the birdseye looks kinda solid, but when you get close enough to shake hands, you can see the depth.  The shoulder pads are minimal, arms are decently high (could be a little higher), and the button stance and lapels are great.  An upgrade from a standard, plain two button, in a awesome off the rack fit and good price.  These are suit separates, so you’ll need to buy the pants too.

Nice price.  Just over the free shipping threshold as long as you click through the link Lands’ End provided.  Don’t think you can’t wear this now.  A khaki color like this goes surprisingly well with black.  So layer a black v-neck over a button up shirt, put this on top, and you’re good to go (as long as you haven’t forgotten to wear pants).

 

Nailhead Pocket Square – $3.99 ($9.50)

Casual but not ratty.

It’s close, but it’s not quite the striped chambray pocket square that sold out in the spring.  Looks to be made from the same fabric their Oxford Blazer is made from (and on a side note, that blazer, which needs to be softened up with some wear and tailored at the sides, ain’t half bad at all for the low price).  One of those items that could come in handy if you’re close to the $50 threshold.
