Offered Without Comment: $30 Selvage Jeans?

i’d pass on these. good price? sure, but if you’re patient for sales, you can pick up decent pairs of selvage jeans below $40 (e.g., gap selvage).

I haven’t really gotten into the selvedge thing but plan to go by JCP in the next couple of days to get another pair of 511s and the Claiborne suede wingtips posted yesterday. I plan to check these out.

I think they look pretty good for $30. If they had em in my size I’d give em a go.

Call me ignorant, but I guess I don’t see what the big deal is with selvage denim. So they create it using an old fashioned method? What’s the real benefit there? Is it supposed to be higher quality fabric that will last longer? Aside from the colored selvage edge, it just looks like denim to me.

pretty much, the nice thing is the whole lasting longer part, I just bought a pair of unbranded jeans that are selvedge, its been 6 months and i havent washed em, they look great, and their still sturdy. My 514′s have a hole in the knee after 6 months, at the end of the day you get what you pay for

Mass-produced foreign labor can be socially responsible if managed properly. Conversely, domestic labor can be socially irresponsible. My point is more that we have no idea who makes these and how (for instance) the workers are treated. That being said, I don’t actually care that much about SRS. I just thought it was worth mentioning.

Selvedge somewhat implies ‘small batch’ because of the width of the cloth compared to large scale industrial looms. It’s certainly true that higher quality denim tends to be selvedge, but the other way around isn’t necessarily the case.

At first I thought maybe the picture just wasn’t flattering, but they actually look worse in person.

Definitely a “young men’s” cut. Loose around the midsection and thighs and tapers from the knee to a skinny 15″. (Reference pair 32×32)

Cato misdefined “Socially responsible” for their own skewed POV- that’s a straw man they were able to knock down.

I went and bought some this last weekend. They were no longer on sale but I tried them on anyhow. At Gap I am a 28×30. JCP does not have these in a 28, not even on the website.

I tried them on and was surprised that they fit! They have a more “standard” jean cut like I would expect “vintage” denim to have. Full in the legs and tapered slightly as the go down. I would say they are similar in cut to Gap’s “Straight” or “Standard”. The only MAIN difference I could find are the read pockets are large. On a small person they are bigger than normal Gap jean pockets. I was impressed with the stiffness and weight of the material as well. The weave looks like the 2007 Gap Selvage Demin that I own already with lots of imperfections and not the more “too perfect” Gap Selvage denim they sell now. They are labeled as being made in Cambodia. The color is a true dark indigo color. It runs off a little with some saliva on my fingers. They should “fade” nicely. I wont be washing them for a while! The Selvage seam runs up and down the outside seam and a small stripe on the pocket watch pocket. there is also an application of a selvage trim line along the back pocket and one of the front belt loops. Nice touches that make it look a little nicer than just some regular Arizona jeans.

Even thought I am a 28×30 these were snug enough I can wear without a belt. I bought the smallest size 30/32. Since I cuffed them two inches they work perfect with my desert boots. I have about 3/4 inch of “pinch” around my calves and about 2 inches total around the thickest part of my thighs.

Someone told me my ass looks “great” in them! (Nice bonus)

Altogether I think $30 would have been a great steal on these. Even at $35 they are worth it, especially considering the Gap down the road only has Selvage Demin at $90 (without the 25% promotion they are running this week). Also, I think these Arizona are a higher quality than the Gap ones I tried on the same day. Even though it loses a few points for the HUGE butt pockets, it gains the points back for making my ass look “GREAT”
