As a married, child-free, rural-bohemian woman, I gotta say, while I don’t particularly care for the style of dress displayed here (my husband is just too blocky for any of this, it wouldn’t flatter him at all, no matter how well-tailored; he’s an attractive man, he’s just built like muscular hobbit), I WILL say that making an effort to look nice for your significant other speaks volumes. We find it flattering; it makes us feel special.
So yes, put on that dress shirt and blazer combo, or perhaps a comfy-yet-nice seamless cable sweater. Make sure your slacks or PRESSED jeans are darker then your torso ensemble and for heaven’s sake, please wear dress shoes! Black tennis-shoes do NOT count! They can be well-kept brown leather loafers, they can be over-the-ankle black motor boots with shiny silver buckles running up one side, whatever, just so long as they’re DRESSY.
Ahem.

it should’nt be about what you wear or what you buy..it’s about spending time and enjoying eachothers company.

The point is to put some effort and thought into making you (and your relationship) feel appreciated. From one who has been handed the convenience store generic bouquet accompanied by the first cutesy card off the shelf with the expectation that this should “be good enough – I got you something, didn’t I?”, this advise says there is more to the object of your affection than fulfilling some imagined duty to the day.
If your man already makes something special out of spending time with you, congratulations! Don’t take it for granted.
For the rest of us, the trash can is the only place a thoughtless gift belongs, regardless of what day it is.
