Somewhere between tapered leg acid wash and pre-destroyed monster flares, jeans started approaching the $100 mark.  Gap has some good stuff, as does Express.  But sometimes the washes are goofy or there’s pre-ripped holes in the denim you’re about to shell out for.  And pre-ripped denim is like a pre-ripped baseball hat brim.  Nothing is worse than faux-character.  It’s worse than no-character.

Here are the four stages of jeans life:

1. Buy them
2. Wash them inside out
3. One day you notice a hole or a small rip
4. They’re retired to casual weekend wear
